*THIS IS A TEMPORARY TIME POSITION - (40hrs./wk. for 10 wks.)*

Under the general direction of the Program Coordinator, the incumbent is responsible foremost for the engagement and safety of participants. In addition, S.T.A.R.S. counselors' expectations are to be active and attentive to the guidelines and needs of both the academic and recreational elements of the program. Responsibilities may include but are not limited to, activity facilitation, instructional support, daily reporting, processing of registration, cash handling, customer service, miscellaneous paperwork, general clean up, set up and custodial duties. This job has no supervisory responsibilities.
Responsibilities and Reporting During an Emergency Situation:
Essential Employees may be required to work during a declared emergency. Depending on the nature of the emergency, this may require working around the clock for several days on short notice.
Non Essential Employees will not be required to work during a declared emergency. The employee's Department Head will determine when the employee will be required to work.

Duties/Responsibilities

  • Actively engage with participants in educational and recreational programs, and or activities.
  • Execute programs/lessons as assigned.
  • Plan interactive activities for groups as assigned.
  • Must have excellent behavior management skills and provide positive communication between parents and staff.
  • Assist in the preparation, organization, and use of instructional aids, materials, and technology as directed.
  • Responsible for cash handling, as needed.
  • Provide information and instruction to clients with respect to buildings, facilities, and programs.
  • Processing class registrations, record maintenance, and general cleanup is expected.
  • Perform custodial duties, as needed.
  • This position requires regular and reliable attendance and the employee's physical presence at the workplace.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
  • Skill to make sound judgment.

  • Ability to speak clearly and persuasively in positive or negative situations.
  • Ability to operate necessary equipment including but not limited to, ice resurfacing equipment, ice skate sharpener and sporting equipment, computer, telephone, facsimile machine and copier.
  • Ability to lift and rescue swimmers who are in need of assistance
  • Ability to work in heat, humidity, wetness, and around noise, fumes and odors

Minimum Requirements

  • May be a student currently enrolled in high school in pursuit of a high school diploma.
  • Six (6) months experience working with children, education or recreation; and/or training that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age
  • Mandatory Drug/Alcohol Testing required.
  • Must obtain CPR, AED and First Aid Training Certification within twelve months of hire date.
  • When assigned to working with Youth, must meet the Department of Children and Families (DCF) requirements and inspections.

  • High School diploma/GED preferred

This work typically requires the following physical activities to be performed.

  • Visual Acuity 2 - color, depth perception, field of vision.
  • Visual Acuity 3 - determine accuracy, neatness, observe facilities/structures.
  • Visual Acuity 4 - operate motor vehicles/heavy equipment.
  • Visual Acuity 5 -close acuity for inspection of small defects, machines, use measurement devices, or fabricate parts.
  • Walking - on foot to accomplish tasks, long distances, or site to site.
Work performed is primarily:
  • Light work: Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force to move objects.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
  • Frequently have exposure to adverse environmental conditions such as extreme temperatures, wetness, humidity, toxic or caustic chemicals, noise, dust, wind, and sun.
  • Contact with internal and external customers, vendors, outside agencies and the general public.
  • May be required to work hours other than the regular schedule including nights, weekends, and holidays.
