Job Description:

SUMMARY

Working under the direction of the Community Relations and Education Specialist, and Community Outreach Educator, the incumbent will support educational programs, tours, summer camps, and community-focused events. The incumbent is expected to exercise good judgment, independence, initiative, and professional expertise in conducting day-to-day operations. All work duties and activities must be performed in accordance with the City safety rules and operating regulations, policies and procedures as well as federal, state, and local regulations.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the ability to interact with the public, City incumbents, and outside agencies with patience, tact, respect, and professionalism and the following. Other duties may be assigned.
  • Assists with tours, educational programs, summer camp, and community events;
  • Communicates clearly with staff, donors, sponsors, vendors, volunteers, and event guests;
  • Manages lesson plans and room set-up for educational programs;
  • Develops interactive lessons for children focusing on topics such as: responsible pet ownership, spay/neuter, dog bite prevention, etc.;
  • Assists in developing humane education videos;
  • Provides support as needed for social media, website and newsletter materials;
  • Performs other duties and special projects, as assigned.
PERFORMANCE EXPECTATIONS

The incumbent is responsible to manage their performance in accordance with this job description and the performance expectations provided to them by management. If at any time the incumbent is unsure of their role or specific responsibilities, it is the incumbent's responsibility to refer to their job description and ask for clarification from their supervisor. Management will work with the incumbent, as needed, to ensure performance expectations are clearly communicated and performance goals are achieved.

This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
  • Minimum age of 16 years old and interested in pursuing a related degree/career upon graduation;
  • Experience working with children.
OTHER KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS and/or ABILITIES
  • Flexibility and effective task management skills;
  • Project management skills;
  • Ability to effectively communicate with people;
  • Ability to give presentations in front of a group/public speaking skills;
  • Ability to create effective lesson plans for children of all ages;
  • Ability to prioritize and work effectively as a member of the team;
  • Excellent written, oral, and analytical skills;
  • Proficient in Microsoft computer applications (Word, Excel, Publisher, Outlook etc.);
  • Commitment to the mission of Fort Wayne Animal Care & Control;
  • High energy level and takes initiative in a fast-paced environment;
  • Self-starter and ability to work independently and monitor performance objectives to meet goals and deadlines.
LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

Valid Indiana Driver's License if a City vehicle is used.
