JOB SUMMARY

This position is responsible for the removal of household refuse and debris in the City.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Responsible for placing refuse in the collection vehicle manually.
  • Removes household refuse from residences.
  • Removes yard debris from residences.
  • Removes metal or white goods (bulky items) from residences.
  • Assists driver with routine maintenance and cleaning of vehicles and tools to include pressure washing and sanitizing.
  • Cleans the tool shed.
  • Removes dead animals.
  • Ensures trash roll carts are placed off the street in a neat and tidy manner.
  • Serves as back up to co-workers.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • One-year experience as a Refuse Collector preferred.
  • Experience in a Sanitation department is desirable.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Knowledge of truck operation, to include the moving parts and operation of the tippers.
  • Knowledge of safety practices involved in refuse collection.
  • Knowledge of routes.
  • Knowledge of department policies and procedures.
  • Skill in oral communication.
  • Skill in the use of hand tools, to include shovel, rake and pitchfork.
  • Ability to perform heavy lifting.
  • Ability to operate a pressure washer.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment moving quickly to and from residences for refuse collection.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Primary work location is outdoors. Frequent exposure to unpleasant environmental conditions and / or hazards. Majority of work performed outside or with exposure to risk.

Daily exposure to extreme temperature, wetness and / or humidity, respiratory hazards, noise and vibration, and physical hazards.

Constant exposure to communicable disease, and physical danger. Frequent exposure to traffic. Occasional exposure to chemical hazards.

The work requires the use of protective devices including be not limited to steel-toed boots, safety vest, eye protection, hearing protection, and gloves.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Continuously requires standing, walking, lifting, carrying, reaching, vision, hearing, twisting, and talking. Frequently requires crawling, pushing / pulling, climbing, foot controls, bending, and crouching.

Occasionally requires sitting, kneeling, and balancing. Heavy strength demands include exerting 50-100 pounds occasionally, 25-50 pounds frequently, or from 10 up to 20 pounds constantly.

MENTAL DEMANDS

Frequently requires change of tasks, performing multiple tasks simultaneously, working closely with others as part of a team, and noisy / distracting environment.

Occasionally requires time pressures, emergency situations, irregular schedule / overtime, and tedious or exacting work.
