CLASSIFICATION SPECIFICATION


CLASSIFICATION TITLE: LANDSCAPE TECHNICIAN

PURPOSE OF CLASSIFICATION

The purpose of this classification is to perform general landscaping work in order to develop and maintain City parks, grounds, properties, and facilities; and inspects and maintains playground equipment and other assigned structures.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.

  • Performs a variety of landscaping duties; plans, plants, prunes, and fertilizes and waters trees, shrubs, flowers, bulbs and other plants; inspects plants and trees; identifies plant health problems and/or diseases and takes appropriate action to protect plants and/or correct problems; applies herbicides, insecticides and fungicides as needed. 
  • Inspects playground equipment and other assigned structures such as park shelters, picnic benches and tables, park fountains, and skate park equipment; performs preventive maintenance work; ensures playground equipment is safe and operational; identifies and performs needed repairs; replaces broken or worn parts; applies safety surfaces on playground as needed; paints surfaces; and power sprays open air shelters.
  • Checks grounds for safety hazards and vandalism and reports findings to supervisor
  • Performs a variety of grounds maintenance tasks, such as trimming trees; removing stumps; mowing, watering and fertilizing lawns; raking, mulching, edging and weeding plant beds; removing trash and debris, shoveling snow; blowing off leaves and debris from shelters, and sidewalks; 
  • Performs a variety of facilities maintenance tasks which may include cleaning park facilities and equipment, repairing and painting park shelters, tables, and benches, removing/installing playground equipment and fences, hanging flags, removing graffiti; and performing related work.
  • Operates a variety of equipment in the performance of duties, which may include a dump truck, tree auger, backhoe, chemical applicator, weedeater, tamper, post hole digger, cutting torch, drill, chainsaw, tractor, leaf blower, leaf vacuum, shovel, pick ax, mechanic’s tools, and carpenter’s tools.
  • Performs preventive maintenance and cleaning of equipment, tools and supplies; performs minor repairs to equipment as needed; informs supervisor of major equipment problems and/or the need to replace equipment.
  • Assists in training grounds maintenance workers; and assists a variety of groups and/or individuals with community service projects.
  • Answers telephone and provides information, takes/relays messages, or refers to appropriate personnel as needed.
  • Responds to questions and requests for assistance from park attendees, and the general public. 
  • Cleans and replenishes supplies in shelters and park restroom facilities. 
  • Maintain regular and predictable in-person attendance during regular business hours of the City of Henderson is required.
  • Must undergo and successfully complete drug test and alcohol screening prior to employment and undergo and successfully complete future drug test and/or alcohol screening pursuant to the City’s Drug and Alcohol policy.

Performs other related duties as required, necessary, or assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

High school diploma or GED; supplemented by two (2) years previous landscaping and grounds maintenance work; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job. Requires a valid driver’s license, Category 3 Pesticide Applicator’s license, and certification in blood borne pathogens.

Human Interaction: Requires the ability to exchange information for the purpose of clarifying details within well established policies, procedures and standards.

Equipment, Machinery, Tools, and Materials Utilization: Requires the ability to operate, maneuver and/or control the actions of equipment, machinery, tools, and/or materials used in performing essential functions. 

Verbal Aptitude: Requires the ability to utilize a wide variety of reference and descriptive data and information.

Mathematical Aptitude: Requires the ability to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.

Functional Reasoning: Requires the ability to apply principles of rational systems; to interpret instructions furnished in written, oral, diagrammatic, or schedule form; and to exercise independent judgment to adopt or modify methods and standards to meet variations in assigned objectives.

Situational Reasoning: Requires the ability to exercise judgment, decisiveness and creativity in situations involving a variety of generally pre-defined duties which are often characterized by frequent change.

ADA COMPLIANCE

Physical Ability: Tasks require the regular and sustained performance of moderately physically demanding work, typically involving some combination of climbing and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling, and that generally involves lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of moderately heavy objects and materials (20-50 pounds).

Sensory Requirements: Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate sounds, odor, depth, and visual cues or signals. Some tasks require the ability to communicate orally.

Environmental Factors: Performance of essential functions may require exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, rain, temperature and noise extremes, machinery, or toxic agents.
