Pay Rate: $26 per hour
Full-time, limited duration, non-exempt position plus full benefits package.

About this Opportunity
Are you ready to dive into a new career with a purpose? The City of Hillsboro Water Department is seeking a motivated individual to join our team as an Operator-In-Training! This is a unique opportunity to earn-while-you-learn gaining practical skills and valuable experience in water treatment, and water distribution. In addition to the training, the participant will establish credit and hours towards an Oregon Health Authority Drinking Water Operator Certification and a Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) Wastewater Certification. Successful completion of the OIT program may lead to other career opportunities in Water at the City of Hillsboro.
What You Will Be Doing
As an Operator-In-Training, you will shadow seasoned water operators to experience the work that is done within the distribution system and at the water treatment plant. There may also be the opportunity to work with other disciplines within the Water Department.
Water Treatment Plant (6 Months)

  • Assist operators and lab technician, including assisting with routine lab testing
  • Assist in operating the treatment plant through SCADA (Supervisory Control & Data Acquisition)
  • Assist with water sampling in the watershed and assist with documentation review
  • Assist water treatment staff with maintenance to process equipment and instrumentation.
Water Operations (6 months)
  • Assist with operations and maintenance activities performed in Hillsboro’s Cherry Grove water system working at the Slow Sand Filter Plant, Cherry Grove water distribution and Barney Reservoir
  • Assist with water main maintenance activities, valve and hydrant maintenance, meter replacements and other aspect of Water Operations
Our Ideal Candidate Will:
  • Have interest in but not necessarily have experience in the water/wastewater industry
  • Have interest in basic practices of utility construction and maintenance of underground systems
  • Possess strong listening and communication skills and able to communicate positively and professionally
  • Be able to carry out tasks and/or trainings independently, or in a team environment
  • Be organized, conscientious, and reliable with strong time management skills Requirements
  • Must be a current Hillsboro Resident and member of a historically marginalized community
  • Must complete and pass a physical, drug screen, and criminal background check
  • Must have a valid Driver’s License

  • Full-bore mag meter installation
  • SCADA upgrades.
  • Soda ash improvements at SSFP.
  • Staffing and operating the WWSS

Bilingual Incentive Pay Available
Employees who can demonstrate the ability to speak Spanish, or any language spoken by over ten percent (10%) of City residents as documented by the most recent U.S. Census, at a proficiency level determined by a fluency test administered by the City, will receive a monthly premium of three percent (3%) of their regular base pay.
