OBJECTIVE:
The person in this position works regular shifts at the Children’s Desk, monitors the room, and provides assistance with circulation, readers’ advisory, reference and other customer service to children and adults, both as individuals and in groups. This position is responsible for providing early literacy storytimes and other children’s and family programming and community engagement both in the library and out in the community. This position may also be assigned areas of collection development and other departmental tasks, such as scheduling, monthly reports and statistics, and coordinating in-room activities.
 
RELATIONSHIPS:
Reports to: Head of Youth Services

Has no regular supervisory duties.
 
Has regular work contacts with Youth Services Librarians, along with staff from other departments.ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

  1. Use a wide variety of resources to provide facilitative, computer, readers’ advisory, and reference assistance to children, parents/caregivers, teachers, and other library users in person and over the telephone.
  2. Monitor activity in the Children’s Room for general safety, appropriate behavior, and to build relationships to create life-long library users.
  3. Be familiar with library policies and communicate them effectively to patrons.
  4. Assist with, plan, and conduct early literacy storytimes and other programs for families and children, birth to eleven, and their teachers and caregivers.
  5. Assist with summer library program execution.
  6. Promote early literacy, department materials, services, and programs by developing displays, conducting tours and visits on- and off-site, participating in community engagement activities, and contributing to the maintenance of social media as assigned.
  7. May be assigned a collection to select and maintain.
  8. May be assigned coordination of monthly statistics & reports, departmental schedule, displays, in-room activities & toys, or other on-going tasks.
  9. Represent the Youth Services Department on committees within Hedberg Public Library and the community upon the request of the Head of Youth Services.
  10. Foster a collaborative relationship with community organizations, businesses, educational institutions, and agencies in the City of Janesville.
  11. Maintain positive working relations with staff, the public, and volunteers.
  12. Perform other special projects and duties as assigned or required during and after regular business hours including providing support as a part of any City response to essential or emergency operations.
RECOMMENDED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill and/or ability required to successfully perform the essential duties of the position.

Education and Experience 

  1. Some college education is required. A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university is preferred.
  2. Minimum one (1) year library experience, or several years’ experience in a related field working with children or any equivalent combination of college and work experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to meet the essential duties of the position is required. 
A candidate for this position should have thorough knowledge, skills, and abilities in the following:

Knowledge of:
  1. Library classification system.
  2. Working knowledge of computers and data processing equipment (i.e., computer software programs such as those in a Microsoft Office environment) is required.
  3. Working knowledge of electronic resources including the internet and education or library related sites.
Skill in: 
  1. Public speaking and effective interpersonal communication.
  2. Intermediate computer operation including the knowledge and use of Microsoft Office applications.
  3. Handling detail-oriented work.
  4. Customer service best practices.
Ability to: 
  1. Relate to children (birth to eleven), their parents, caregivers, teachers, and the general public.
  2. Read/view and be familiar with new and classic children’s books and media.
  3. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff and the public.
  4. Maintain a positive attitude and professional demeanor when dealing with the public and co-workers.
  5. Communicate effectively, both verbally and in written form, and to follow verbal and written instructions with minimum supervision.
  6. Be reliable, steady, timely, and proactive in completion of duties.
  7. Use tact, diplomacy, and good judgment to resolve problems, handle conflict, and make effective decisions under library policy.
  8. Comply with all safety policies, practices, and procedures, and reporting all unsafe activities to supervisor.
  9. Interact with a diverse group of individuals.
  10. Work effectively as part of a team.
  11. Make announcements using the library’s public address system.
  12. Resolve problems, handle conflict, and find solutions to conflict when in stressful situations.
EQUIPMENT, INSTRUMENTS OR MACHINES:
Machinery and equipment including computers, printers, cash register, photocopier, telephone, intercom system, scanners, and other standard and specialized office equipment. 
 
PHYSICAL FACTORS:
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by any an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
 
While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in a public library and office environment. An individual in this position is frequently involved in sedentary work, which requires sitting for the majority of the time. This position occasionally walks, stands, stoops, kneels, crouches, crawls and exerts up to 10 pounds of force by lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, or otherwise moving objects. The employee is frequently required to see/observe, talk/speak and listen/hear; use their hands to finger, handle, feel or operate objects and equipment; repetitive arm, wrist, hand and eye movements are included. There is frequent twisting, reaching, wrist turning and grasping. The employee may be required to climb or balance.
 
Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus. Hand-eye coordination is necessary to operate computers and various pieces of equipment. Employee is required to use cognitive ability to reason, analyze and verbalize thoughts and ideas. Requires the ability to recognize and identify similarities or differences between characteristics of colors, shapes and sounds associated with job-related objects, materials or tasks.

The employee will spend the majority of the working day inside speaking with other employees or members of the public. Hours vary and may include some evening or weekend hours. The working conditions in the office are comfortable. The noise level is generally moderately noisy.
