Job Description

To perform a variety of routine and semi-skilled work in solid waste operations. Assists in maintaining, repairing, servicing, and transporting all containers that are used in commercial and residential operations.
Essential Duties
Assists in providing mobile repairs to containers used in commercial operations. Drives a medium duty truck containing a portable welder, cutting torch and/or other small tools necessary to repair all metal containers primarily used by commercial customers.
Assists in performing welding repairs off site as needed on metal containers, such as lids, doors, bottoms, and fork loops.
Drives and operates the container hauler vehicle with lifting forks used to deliver empty dumpster containers to a customer, or to retrieve and return containers to stock when accounts are closed.
Performs repairs on the polyethylene (plastic) roll-out containers used in residential operations. Replace lids, wheels, lifting bar, and hardware as needed.
Operates shop equipment when repairing metal containers in the Container Services Shop. Washes, cleans, repairs, and places decals on dumpsters as required.
Operates electric/gas welding equipment.
Conducts daily inspection of trucks and welding equipment. Ensures safety before operation.
Performs operator level or preventive maintenance on assigned vehicle and equipment.
Maintains radio or other communications with the supervisor and/or office.
Complies with safety rules, policies, and procedures. Uses and wears personal protective equipment and clothing, and complies with safe working controls.
Performs duties of welder, solid waste worker, and roll-off operator as necessary, when qualified.
Adheres to assigned work schedule as outlined in the Department and City attendance policies and procedures; ensures all behaviors comply with the City's Personnel Rules and Regulations; possesses and maintains a valid driver's license, if required, and comply with City of Killeen driving policy accordingly.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Required Minimum Qualifications
REQUIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience:
  1. Graduation from high school or equivalent, preferred.
  2. Six (6) months of general labor experience, preferred.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  1. Working knowledge of welding operations;
  2. Working knowledge of safety operations;
  3. Skill in operation of listed tools and equipment;
  4. Ability to establish effective working relationships with other employees, and supervisors.
  5. Maintains regular and punctual attendance.
Supplemental Information
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Must have a valid driver's license by date of hire.
TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED
Motorized vehicles and equipment, including container hauler, welding truck, roll-off truck, arc welder, oxy acetylene welder and cutting torch, grinder, cut-off saw, drill, winch and hand tools, radio, and safety equipment.

The employee must constantly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
This position is a safety sensitive position.

The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
