City of Lakeland, Civil Service is Hiring a Construction Pipefitter Near Lakeland, FL

This is a skilled work in the installation and repair of stormwater infrastructure. Work involves performing skilled duties, such as assisting in installing, repairing, and maintaining stormwater systems. The employee normally works under direct supervision, and all work is inspected in progress and upon completion. Immediate supervisor reviews work for results obtained through periodic inspections and reports.

  • Lays storm and sewer pipe; seals joints; mixes mortar; breaks up concrete; grades work areas; loads and unloads trucks.
  • Assists in fabricating and setting construction forms, pouring and finishing concrete, constructing, maintaining, and repairing curbs, gutters, driveway aprons, sidewalks, drainage facilities, sanitary sewer facilities, and other projects, as required.
  • Assists building manholes and catch basins; lays brick; sets manhole covers.
  • Assists in operating power equipment related to work, such as concrete trucks, concrete saws, air compressors, concrete finishing tools, and other necessary equipment.
  • Oversees and assists in loading and unloading trucks and breaks up concrete and pavement.
  • Operates mechanical equipment such as concrete truck, bobcat, vibratory roller, tamper, air hammer, concrete saw, and air compressor.
  • May be required to work overtime, or alternate hours, as necessary for the efficient operation of the department.
  • Position designated as Mission Critical.
ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS: 
  • Performs emergency repairs on the stormwater system after normal working hours; is subject to working overtime and participating in call-out duty.
  • May perform acting foreman duties during normal and overtime hours of operation.
  • Performs related work as required.
  • High school diploma from an accredited school or a GED.
  • One (1) year of experience installing, repairing, and maintaining stormwater systems.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS 
  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license. 
  • Must be able to obtain Class “A” or “B” CDL with appropriate endorsements as required by the employing department within six (6) months of employment.
  • Must maintain a valid telephone number.
  • Considerable knowledge of the methods, materials, practices, and tools required for stormwater collection.
  • Skill in using pipefitting, caulking, plumbing, and pneumatic tools.
  • Ability to read and interpret stormwater maps and construction blueprints.
  • Ability to work independently without direct supervision.
  • Ability to troubleshoot, such as testing and locating leaks.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, other City employees, and the general public.
  • Ability to perform heavy physical manual tasks for extended periods, often in adverse climatic conditions.
  • Ability to prepare reports and daily paperwork.
  • Ability to communicate to Public Works employees and internal and external customers via
  • telephone, radio, and other means of communication.
  • Ability to be a self-starter, self-motivated, and detail-oriented.
  • Ability to direct the actions of fellow employees.
  • Ability to set grades using a construction level.
  • Ability to set up and use a storm pipe laser.
WORKING ENVIRONMENT/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • Requires heavy work that involves lifting, shoveling, walking, or standing most of the time, and carrying 35 to 100 pounds on a regular and recurring basis along with exerting up to 100 pounds of force frequently. 
  • The job risks exposure to some significant environmental hazards (entering confined spaces, chemical, electrical, mechanical, height, and heat), bright/dim light, inside and outside environmental conditions, and noise levels.
  • The job requires normal visual acuity, field of vision, hearing, speaking, color perception, sense of smell, depth perception, and texture perception.
