Dash Transportation Driver II
Part-Time/No Benefits
$17.72 per hour

The City of Lakewood is seeking responsible individuals with exceptional customer service skills and good driving records to serve as Transportation Drivers for the DASH senior and disabled transportation program. Under the direction of the Community Transportation Supervisor, the DASH Transportation Driver II operates mini-buses or vans transporting senior, disabled and other residents within the City of Lakewood and adjacent communities and on other assignments. DASH Transportation Drivers are subject to the Controlled Substances and Alcohol Testing (CSAT) regulations under the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMSCA) and California Law. This is an at-will position and the incumbents will serve at the pleasure of the City Manager or designee.
DASH Operation hours are typically 7:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday - Friday, with varying hours Saturdays and Sundays. Schedules and hours may vary and may require working nights, weekends, holidays, and on a stand-by basis. Incumbent hours will vary per week, depending on the needs of the department or program, not to exceed 1,000 hours per fiscal year.

Examples of Duties

Incumbents transport senior citizens, disabled and other persons in passenger vans/mini-buses to destinations within Lakewood, adjacent communities, on special runs, and other approved perimeters; receive daily driving assignments and schedules and make modifications to routes as directed by the dispatcher based on customer cancelations, transfers, no shows or change of service needs; provide safe and courteous transportation from origin to destination; assist passengers getting on and off the vehicle which includes pushing and pulling wheelchairs, assisting with and securing packages, walkers, wheelchairs and other personal belongings; promote positive customer service relations; practice safe driving techniques and passenger safety; perform in a position that is occasionally strenuous involving lifting, pushing and pulling; operate wheelchair lift; maintain interior and exterior of vehicles and ensure the vehicles are operating efficiently and safely; complete driver's safety inspections at beginning and end of shift; complete passenger logs throughout the day; operate a two-way radio; provide CPR and/or first aid as needed; may perform related duties as required.

Qualifications

Special Requirements - 1) Valid California Class C Operator's license with a good driving record as evidenced by a DMV Driving Record* printout covering 10 years of your driving history. The record must show no violations or points identified within the last two years, and 2) Ability to obtain and maintain a Commercial Class C Operator's license with a passenger endorsement and with a good driving record from the DMV within 6 months of appointment and 3) Possess (or ability to obtain) and maintain current certification from the American Red Cross or the American Heart Association in First Aid, CPR, and AED. CPR certification and AED certification needs to include adults and children. (Certification must be obtained within six months of appointment).
A current driving record from the Department of Motor Vehicles must be submitted along with your application. The Driving Record printout MUST include your driving record for the last 10 years. You may obtain a print out at a DMV field office or online at www.dmvca.gov. Applications submitted without a Driver Record printout will be considered incomplete and not given consideration.
Education and Experience - High School diploma or equivalent. One year of customer service experience with substantial public contact and/or community relations work is preferred. Previous experience driving passengers in a van, paratransit bus, mini-bus, or commercial transportation vehicle is highly desirable.
Knowledge - The California Motor Vehicle Code, traffic regulations; fundamentals of customer service; and safe driving practices.
Skills & Abilities - Safely operate a passenger van/mini-bus; pull, push and tie down wheelchairs and operate electric wheelchair ramps, lifts and similar devices; assist passengers on and off the vehicle; deal effectively and courteously with the public; follow and carry out oral and written instructions; complete daily log sheet data; ability to correctly use computerized navigation systems; adhere to schedules; keep open lines of communication; perform pre-trip and post-trip inspection of vehicles for mechanical problems; accurately and legibly complete incident, accident and inspection reports; practice safe driving habits and defensive driving techniques; communicate effectively with dispatcher and report any changes in routes or issues with traffic delays or passengers; and provide information regarding city services and programs to passengers.
Physical and Mental Demands: Ability to climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, reach, stand, walk up and down stairs, sit for long periods; administer good hand and foot controls while driving; perform simple and power grasping; lift, push and/or pull wheelchair bound clients; push and/or pull weight in excess of 100 pounds; lift and carry items (e.g. grocery bags, wheelchairs) weighing up to 25 pounds frequently and 50 pounds occasionally; enter and exit vehicle repeatedly; able to see and hear within normal ranges; hear sirens while driving and communicating with passengers.

Environmental Exposure: Exposure to traffic and two-way radio noise; seasonal climate and varying weather conditions; gas fumes while fueling; and vibration of the steering wheel.

Selection Procedure: All properly submitted applications will be reviewed and evaluated. Those candidates whose qualifications most closely meet the needs of the position will be invited to compete in the examination process. The examination process may consist of any one or a combination of the following examination procedures, which include, but are not limited to: oral interview, written examination, work sample exercises, qualifications appraisal interview, and/or performance test. Not all applicants may be tested or interviewed.

COMPENSATION: City employees are paid on a bi-weekly basis, therefore, published monthly salary is for illustration purposes only, rounded to whole dollars. Actual salary is based on hourly rate rounded to four decimal places.

RESTRICTIONS ON NEPOTISM: The employment of relatives can create undesirable results, particularly in connection with performance evaluation, discipline, and general morale of other workers. Therefore, it is the city's policy that no relative of any City officer or employee to which this resolution applies shall be employed, if said City officer or employee is in a supervisory, lead or subordinate position over said relative in the areas of hiring, setting compensation, discipline or termination. "Relatives" for this purpose include son, daughter, mother, father, brother, brother-in-law, sister, sister-in-law, son-in-law, daughter-in-law, mother-in-law, father-in-law, aunt, uncle, nephew, niece, stepparent, stepchild, grandparent, grandchild, or persons living in the same household. PHYSICAL EXAMINATION: Employment offers are conditional based, upon the successful completion of a medical examination which includes drug and alcohol screening for safety sensitive positions. Physicals are performed by the City's designated physician at the City's expense. Candidates are cautioned not to quit their jobs or give notice to their current employers until they are determined to be medically qualified.
TUBERCULOSIS TESTING: Candidates selected to work in a position requiring contact with children must submit a certificate or notice documenting that within the last two years they have been examined and found to be free of communicable tuberculosis. The certificate or notice must be signed by a licensed examining physician or public health agency.
POSSESSION OF A VALID CALIFORNIA DRIVER'S LICENSE: Employees in classifications requiring possession of a valid California driver's license will be enrolled in the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) Government Employer Pull Notice program, which confirms possession of a valid driver's license and reflects the driving record.
LOYALTY OATH OR AFFIRMATION: All City employees are required to sign a loyalty oath or affirmation prior to actual employment.
EMERGENCY SERVICE: All City employees are required to perform assigned Emergency Service duties in the event of an emergency or disaster.
PROBATIONARY PERIOD: Employees appointed to positions in the classified service are required to serve a probationary period of not less than six months. All other employees are considered at-will and serve at the pleasure of the appointing authority.
