This is a public service position with responsibility for public service work in the Youth Services division, assisting with programming and other support tasks as assigned. Duties are performed under the overall supervision of the Division Supervisor. The purpose of this class is to provide basic library services primarily for youth. The class is responsible for assisting patrons with reference searches, general library services, assisting with library projects, and specialized functions. Individuals in this position are also required to learn and interpret policies and procedures of the library. The class works within a general outline of work to be performed; develops work methods and sequences under general supervision.
Essential Job Functions

• Assists patrons with selecting and locating library materials and general library information.

• Oversees and assists patrons in the use of computers and other library technology.

• Shelves books and other materials located in the youth services department. Shelves and checks for materials not shelved correctly, and assist with shifting of materials as needed.

• Maintains collection through assistance with weeding projects as assigned.

• Assists in the supervision and instruction of volunteers.

• Plans, prepares, and maintains library displays, bulletin boards and decorations in the youth services department.

• Designs and prepares promotional fliers for the youth programs.

• Performs specialized library functions such as planning, implementing and presenting youth programs, when trained and so assigned. Age groups range from preschool, elementary school age, "tweens" eight to twelve years old and young adults thirteen to eighteen years old.

• Assists with programs and oversight of the teen room.

• Performs related tasks such as answering phones, troubleshooting computer problems, and assisting with library projects.

• Performs duties with a professional and cooperative work ethic.

• Maintains confidentiality of patron information.

Minimum Requirements

Requires a high school diploma or GED. Requires one-year experience with yout h in a library organization or other job-rated field. Some customer service experience working in public libraries or similar settings is preferred. Some post-secondary education obtained from a community college, business/vocational school or degree from an accredited college or university is desirable. Experience working with children and/or teens. This class must be able to guide others, making frequent decisions, affecting the individual, coworkers, library patrons, and others that depend on the service or product. Ability to utilize mathematics and Standard English, standard computers, software and business equipment. Ability to follow directions and pay attention to small details. Capacity to communicate with and assist patrons of all ages. Ability to use judgment in performing library duties. Strong computer and internet skills required. Working knowledge of social media platforms, e.g. Facebook, Instagram, etc. preferred. Must be able to work weekends and evenings. Must possess a valid Florida driver's license and satisfactory driving record as a condition of initial and continued employment.
