Clerk of Court
Position Summary:
Under general supervision, manages all non-judicial functions for the Municipal Court and staff by setting trial dates, reviewing cases, aiding in the development of the departmental budget, and preparing reports.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities:
  • Collects payments and prepares deposits; reviews cashier drawers at the end of the day; provides customer services in-person and over the phone; assists defendants by setting up deferred disposition, defensive driving, 30-day extensions, and payment plans.
  • Scans closed cases into computer system; tracks the clearance of warrants; works with the Police department to resolve issues as needed; responds to attorneys requesting deferred disposition or court appearances.
  • Creates forms in macros for Court and Warrant Officer use; updates procedures in the Court Manual.
  • Processes employee time sheets; reviews and approves vacation and sick leave; schedules training sessions for Deputy Court Clerks and Warrant Officers.
  • Submits a variety of reports to appropriate departments and agencies; calculates funds needed for the Court budget.
  • Prepares warrants for Judge’s signature; adds and removes cases from the computer system downloads citations; coordinates jury trials.
  • Provides general administrative support to the judge, officers, and attorneys.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned.
Job Requirements:
Knowledge of:
  • Cash handling and basic accounting practices and procedures.
  • Supervisory principles and practices.
  • Court procedures.
  • General legal terminology.
  • Pertinent Federal, State, and local laws, codes, and safety regulations.
  • Record keeping, report preparation, filing methods, and records.
  • General office policies and procedures; computers and general office equipment.
Skill in:
  • Maintaining accurate reports, filing systems, and technical documents.
  • Communicating effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Interacting tactfully and professionally with City staff, outside agencies, and the public.
  • Typing and entering data with speed and accuracy.
  • Organizing work and setting priorities to meet deadlines.
  • Effectively leading, supervising, training and developing assigned staff.
  • Preparing accurate reports and statements.
  • Establishing and maintaining strong working relationships.
  • Operating a computer and related software.
Education and Experience:
High school diploma or GED equivalent and three (3) years of experience in a municipal court setting; OR an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
Licenses, Certifications, and Equipment:
A valid State driver’s license is required.
Must possess a Level II Court Clerk certification.
Work is performed in a standard office environment and customer service window. Operates standard office equipment such as personal computer and related software, fax machine, and copy machine.
Starting Salary:
$45,779 - $49,299 annually, (DOQ) depending on qualifications. Step increase after successful six month probation.
Benefits:
Education Assistance, Annual Step Increases, Certification Pay of up to $150 per month, Uniform Cleaning Allowance of $900 annually, Paid Vacation, Sick, (10) Holidays, (1) Floating Holiday and Longevity Day, Health, Dental (DHMO Plan) and Basic Life, LTD & AD&D paid at 100% for employee along with 45% dependent coverage. Voluntary plans Vision, Additional Life/AD&D, STD, and FSA. Retirement Plan - Texas Municipal Retirement System (TMRS) the City matches two to one. An employee becomes vested with the City at five years unless eligible for prior year service credit.
