The Parks Supervisor is under the supervision of the Parks Superintendent, and performs administrative, supervisory, and skilled maintenance work in the development and implementation of the City's streetscapes and horticulture program, greenbelts, community entryways, and medians. The Streetscapes and Horticulture Supervisor position works in partnership with other employees, departments/divisions, and agencies in delivering effective and innovative services to the residents of Louisville while enhancing the sustainable pollinator and native landscaping program. This is a working supervisor position, and the ideal candidate will be self-directed, highly responsive and customer-service oriented. Assignments are carried out in accordance with general work instructions and knowledge of the principles, practices, and techniques of landscape management. Work is reviewed through observation, meetings, reports, and results obtained. Performs other work as assigned.

  • Plans, organizes, coordinates, and integrates work planning activities and tasks of established work goals. Work goals are planned, implemented, and reviewed quarterly in alignment with the standards established by the Parks Superintendent. Develops and implements policies and procedures to review staff work to achieve established work task completion and outcomes.
  • Plans, assigns, directs, and evaluates the work of full and part time staff and volunteer groups in an effective and efficient manner to achieve division maintenance standards and workplan goals. 
  • Carries out supervisory responsibilities and recommends personnel actions in the areas of hiring, promotion, and discipline for assigned personnel in accordance with City policies and procedures. Specific responsibilities will include onboarding, supporting, training, and mentoring staff and evaluating performance. 
  • Work cooperatively and collaboratively with Division Supervisors and Superintendents on subdivision standards, work planning, capital projects, budget management, project review process for department and cross department requests.
  • Coordinates the development and implementation of maintenance programs associated with all designated city horticulture beds, greenbelts, right of ways, medians, parkways, and City-maintained community entryways while promoting sustainability and pollinator plantings through best management practices.
  • Plans and develops the maintenance program to include irrigation operation and repair, chemical and fertilizer applications, and landscape design and renovation.
  • Establishes and maintains collaborative and effective working relationships with Parks team, supervisors, City staff, City leadership and community members.
  • Attend all assigned meetings and events as requested. 
  • Must support weather-related operations, special and emergent events including reporting after hours as needed.
EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE:
  • Completion of a high school diploma or GED
  • Five (5) years of full-time experience in operating equipment used in parks and facilities maintenance is required.
  • Four (4) years of horticulture experience including design, maintenance and renovations using sustainable and native planting material and practices. 
  • Three (3) years of supervisory experience preferred.
  • An equivalent combination of acceptable related training, education, and experience may be considered.
 
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
  • Knowledge of general, departmental and City policies, procedures, and safety guidelines.
  • Knowledge in fire-wise, sustainable, pollinator and native landscaping design, plantings, soils, and general landscaping management. Maintains knowledge of current trends, best practices, and emerging issues within the region, making necessary recommendations to enhance operations as necessary.
  • Considerable knowledge of the operation and routine maintenance of equipment and trucks and ability to make minor repairs or adjustments in the field.
  • Considerable knowledge of drip and spray irrigation for effective maintenance and operations. Ability to learn water management using central control operations. 
  • Considerable knowledge of the safe use and application of fertilizers and other chemicals.
  • Advanced skill in the safe operation of equipment in rough, uneven, or slippery ground conditions.
  • Skill in scheduling and reviewing the work of subordinates.
  • Ability to maintain inventory and order materials as needed for day-to-day maintenance and projects.
  • Ability to effectively follow routine verbal and written instructions. Read, update, and maintain various records and files, analyze, organize, and review work efficiencies for accuracy. Ability to access, operate, and maintain various software applications. Prepare weekly, monthly, and quarterly reporting regarding work activities.
  • Ability to provide clear and concise communications in both verbal and written format as supported by the Parks Division.
  • Ability to exercise considerable independent judgment in the scheduling and development of tasks, working within established standards.
  • Ability to set priorities, meet critical deadlines, and follow up on assignments as necessary.
  • Ability to balance and perform both field and office skill sets.
  • Ability to flex work hours outside of normal business hours including some nights, weekends and call outs as required.
  • Ability to perform strenuous work in all types of weather conditions. 
SPECIAL LICENSE, REGISTRATION, OR CERTIFICATE REQUIRED:
  • Current Colorado Driver License in good standing with no major violations in the past three (3) years and must maintain good standing through employment.
  • Current Colorado Department of Agriculture Pesticide Applicator's License or ability to obtain within six (6) months of hire and maintain current status through employment.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS OF THE JOB:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands, and fingers, to handle or feel objects or tools. The employee is regularly required to reach, push and pull with hands and arms; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl; and read, speak, and hear. The employee is frequently required to sit, stand, walk, kneel, climb and/or balance.
The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision and depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
The employee regularly works near parks maintenance equipment and moving mechanical parts. The employee is exposed to outside weather conditions. The employee is frequently exposed to equipment vibration, fumes, airborne particles and toxic or caustic chemicals. The employee occasionally works in high, precarious places, and may be exposed to sharp objects. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud.
OTHER NECESSARY REQUIREMENTS:
Must be at least 18 years old. Candidates will be required to complete and pass a pre-placement physical, background investigation, and positive reference checks prior to employment.
