Overview

City of Louisville seeks an experienced urban forester. The Parks Maintenance Technician II - Arborist position maintains the urban tree canopy, parks, greenways, streetscapes, and medians for the City.
Under general supervision of the City Forestry and Parks Superintendent, performs skilled and semi-skilled manual labor and operates equipment used in maintaining urban tree canopy in the City's parks system, streetscapes / medians, greenways and other city designated property. Employee may coordinate activities with other workers or work crews and may perform as lead worker for specific short-term assignments. This position may require work on weekends and evenings and is required to assist with snow removal activities on an as needed basis. Performs other work as required.
Hiring Range:
$44,761 to $51,480
$21.52 to $24.75

Examples of Duties

  • Assists with maintaining urban tree canopy, parks, greenways, streetscape/ medians, and other city designated properties. Park related maintenance including but not limited to: care of tree and plant material, maintenance of park infrastructure, landscape projects, various equipment operation, minor construction projects, litter control, snow removal, and sidewalk sweeping, using best management practices associated with tree care and meeting park standards.
  • Prune, remove, and maintain City-owned trees using industry best practices to including planting, mulching, and watering trees.
  • Assist in the identification of insect and disease issues and treat when directed by the City Forester.
  • Operates tractors, pick-up trucks, backhoe, utility vehicles, aerial lift, grappler, chipper, stump grinder, water truck, tree sprayer, snowplows, trimmers, and smaller landscape hand tools.
  • Assisting with special events as scheduled.
  • Plows and removes snow from assigned parking lots, sidewalks, and facilities.
  • Performs general preventative maintenance on equipment.
  • Conduct chemical applications as directed and ensure chemicals are properly stored and used in conformity with City, State and Federal regulations.
  • Provides oversight as needed to support the supervision of assigned part time and/or seasonal employees per work assignment.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
This position is considered a critical/essential worker and is therefore responsible for responding to emergencies and/or disasters that may require additional overtime or adjustments to your normal schedule to fit the needs of the organization.

General Qualifications

  • Completion of a high school diploma or GED.
  • Two (2) years’ full time experience in operating equipment used in Urban Forestry and Parks maintenance.
  • Supervisory experience is beneficial for oversight of part time and/or seasonal staff for short-term assignments.
  • Equivalent combination of acceptable training, education, and experience may be considered.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
  • Knowledge of arboricultural practices and proper tree maintenance and management including the American National Standard Institute Z133.1 Safety Requirements for Arboricultural Operations and the A-300 Tree, Shrub, and other Woody Plant Management-Standard Practices for Urban Tree Canopy Management, to include planting, pruning, general care, and removal. .
  • Knowledge and ability to create and safe usage of rope and saddle, knots, hitches, and mechanical rope devices into technical climbing and rigging situations associated with tree management.
  • Ability to operate commercial forestry, mowing, and landscape industry related equipment.
  • Ability to operate a variety of small and light equipment including vehicles with trailers.
  • Knowledge of required Departmental policies and procedures as well as City policies and procedures.
  • Skill in the safe operation of equipment in rough, uneven, or slippery ground conditions.
  • Skill in the use of computers and software applications, including the Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Skilled in delivering a high level of customer service.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing with a wide variety of individuals including the general public, contractors, volunteers, city staff, and others that use the city’s parks.
  • Ability to work in a flexible team environment.
  • Ability to work with city staff, general public in a professional manner.
  • Ability to provide oversight to part time and/or seasonal staff as assigned.
  • Ability to make adjustments in the field.
SPECIAL LICENSE, REGISTRATION, OR CERTIFICATE REQUIRED:
  • A valid Colorado Driver's License with an acceptable driving record is required.
  • Must be at least 18 years old.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS OF THE JOB:
The employee is regularly required to sit, stand, walk; use hands, fingers, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and read, speak and hear. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds, occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds with assistance. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works near parks maintenance equipment and moving mechanical parts. The work is performed in all types of outside weather conditions from extreme heat to rain, snow, and cold temperatures. The employee is frequently exposed to equipment vibration, fumes, airborne particles and toxic or caustic chemicals. The employee occasionally works in high, precarious places and is occasionally exposed to risk of electrical shock, and sharp objects. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud. Standard 40 hour work week, however seasonal activities may require extended hours and/or weekend work.
OTHER NECESSARY REQUIREMENTS:
