Overview

The City of Louisville is looking for a Sustainability Specialist. If you are collaborative, innovative and a self-motivated person passionate about sustainability come join us and make an impact in Louisville’s sustainability division. This position reports to the Sustainability Program Manager within the City Manager’s Office and will be responsible for general coordination and support for a variety of sustainability programs, events and initiatives to achieve the City’s Climate Action Goals and Sustainability Action Plan objectives. The Sustainability Specialist is expected to be available to occasionally manage events and facilitate meetings on the weekends and evenings as needed.


Hiring Range:
$69,700 to $81,910

Salary Range:$69,700 to $94,099

Examples of Duties

  • Develop and manage commercial and community waste reduction programs including collaboration with external stakeholders, communications and outreach, business and community support, data tracking and reporting, and program administration and evaluation.
  • Work with internal City departments to administer ongoing disposable bag tax including processing retailer correction and materials request forms, budget tracking and reporting.
  • Coordinate Louisville Green Business Program including program administration, outreach and engagement, business support, recognition event planning, and program evaluation and reporting.
  • Develop relationships with business community and increase awareness of sustainability rebates, incentives, programs and resources.
  • Monitor and track progress towards sustainability goals and indicators including greenhouse gas emissions, water use per capita, building energy use and waste diversion rates.
  • Research and review regulatory, technical, and policy issues related to sustainability and develop reports or presentations to communicate the findings and recommendations.
  • Provide support to City departments in regards to sustainability best practices, conduct employee engagement campaigns that promote sustainable practices in the workplace and coordinate sustainability pilot programs for City employees.
  • Assist with sustainability event planning and coordination including the Spring Cleaning Event, Sustainability Film Series, Electrify Your Ride, Bike to Work Day, and Ecotoberfest. Mandatory onsite assistance required for events, including the day prior and day of events.
  • Develop content for sustainability communications including utility bill inserts, monthly e-newsletters, Sustainability Spotlight, social media, and quarterly print newspaper.
  • Support sustainability-related programs and initiatives in residential, multifamily, and commercial/industrial sectors.
  • Provide input, innovation and support in creation of new sustainability programs that support achievement of City’s sustainability goals, considering factors such as cost effectiveness, technical feasibility and environmental impact.
  • Assist with researching available grants and writing grant applications or project proposals to secure funding for sustainability initiatives and projects.
  • Collaborate with City departments and represent the City in meetings, cohorts and collaborations with regional sustainability professionals.
  • Perform related work as required and assigned.

General Qualifications

Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor Degree in Environmental Science/Sustainability, Environmental Management/Policy, Environmental Engineering or relatable field.
  • 3 years of progressively responsible administrative and project planning experience in administering or implementing sustainability oriented and environmental programs.
  • 2 years of municipal or county sustainability experience preferred.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Impeccable and professional written and verbal English communication and presentation skills and familiarity with business communications. Additional fluency in Spanish language is desirable.
  • Strong interpersonal skills including public engagement, customer service and conflict resolution.
  • Ability to analyze problems, identify alternative solutions and recommend conclusions.
  • Experience with research, data management and statistical analysis.
  • Experience with budget preparation and management.
  • Ability to stay current on trends, practices, technology and information related to sustainability.
  • Strong design and marketing skills including knowledge of programs such as InDesign and Mailchimp.
  • Positive attitude, collaborative and resourceful.
  • Self-starter, highly motivated and ability to work independently.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects with varying deadlines, results-oriented and flexible.
  • High proficiency with Microsoft Suite especially with Outlook, Excel and PowerPoint.
Licensing/Certification Requirements:
Valid Colorado driver's license and a safe driving record for last 3 years.

Additional Information

Physical Requirements:
Primarily sedentary physical work requiring ability to lift a maximum of 40 pounds; occasional lifting, carrying, walking and standing; frequent hand/eye coordination to operate computer keyboard and office equipment; vision for reading, recording and interpreting information; speech communication and hearing to maintain communication with employees and members of the public.
Work Environment:
The work is performed in an office environment and occasionally out-of-doors. The employee may be exposed to sites where all types of machinery are used. The employee is exposed to traffic, airborne particles, and may work in all type of weather conditions. Noise levels can range from very low to loud. Travel by automobile is required to reach some project sites. Work is generally scheduled for Monday thru Friday with some evening and weekend hours, however, a flexible schedule may be available.
This position is eligible for a hybrid scheduleworking remotely up to 2 or 3 days a week once training is complete. Your supervisor will determine when a hybrid schedule can begin within your first 6 months and depending on the needs of the City.
