The Position

As a Community Service Officer/Detention Monitor, you will gain first-hand experience working in a police department by helping the community of Maple Grove and its residents. In this role, you will help monitor animal control, assist the community in various tasks, and monitor the police detention facility. Intent of Position
This part-time union position is benefit-earning and intended to serve as a pathway to law enforcement work. The ideal candidate will be pursuing or recently graduating from a law enforcement program and working towards becoming a Police Officer.
Hours: Part-time hours (minimum of 20 hours per week, max of 29). Shifts rotate all week, including days, evenings, overnights, weekends, and holidays.
Hiring Rate: $25.995
- Patrols assigned area by vehicle and/or on foot; locates stray animals and captures them and transports to animal containment facility; Responds to and investigates complaints concerning animal problems or violations of animal control ordinances and issues warnings or citations as required; maintains record of animal complaints and violations. Investigates and follows up on animal welfare checks.
- Enforces parking ordinances. Follow up and investigate violations.
- Assists with enforcing zoning ordinances and conducts investigations on violations such as dumping complaints, illegal parking, and home businesses.
- Conducts mail run, city bank deposits, and delivers city council packets, city administration and Park Board documents, and others as needed. Assists with delivering bail to the Hennepin County courthouse.
- Compiles a variety of data regarding animal control and prepares the necessary reports.
- Writes routine correspondence and reports such as memos, inquiries, and status activity reports.
- Provides mutual assistance with other departments during emergency situations.
- Performs emergency first aid as necessary.
- Assist with fleet maintenance transportation for service and repairs.
- Provide support to sworn officers, such as vehicle impoundment, responding to motor vehicle crashes, directing traffic, and rendering medical aid.
- Aids motorists by giving directions, unlocking cars, making emergency repairs, and removing road debris as needed.
- Participates in youth safety programs such as bicycle safety, , registration, Shop-with-a-Cop, National Night Out, Polar Plunge, Maple Grove Days, or others as identified.
- Conducts fingerprinting services for background checks and applicants. Conducts tours and presents to the public.
- Patrol the park system by walking, riding a bike, or driving the vehicle.
- Conducts visual inspection and physical checks of prisoners in accordance with departmental regulations and maintains accurate records of such checks. Prepares and serves meals to pre-hearing offenders that meet the requirements of the State of Minnesota DOC regulations.
- Observes and monitors the processing and documentation of incoming prehearing offenders.
- Conducts daily Detention Facility inspections and maintains inventory control of jail-related property and supplies and orders or causes to be ordered when additional supplies are necessary. Reports any deficiencies for repair of the Detention facility to the Jail Administrator or CSO Coordinator.
- Assists police officers in releasing of prisoners from custody consistent with departmental policies and procedures. Review documentation submitted by the releasing officer to confirm documentation is filled out entirely. Conducts cell inspections for contraband or damage that may have occurred from previously released offender and documents findings.
- Coordinates efforts to ensure the City of Maple Grove is an equitable, inclusive, and respectful organization and supports the City’s mission, vision, and core values.
- Demonstrates ability to understand and respect the diversity of customers and co-workers, effectively communicating with individuals whose first language may be one other than English.
MARGINAL FUNCTIONS
- Assist with calibration of CO2 detectors.
- Assists with private and commercial kennel license follow-ups.
- Assist with maintaining and stocking medical supply closet.
- Performs other related duties as apparent or assigned.
- Assist the Records Unit with covering the front desk, answering phones, and assisting the public contacts in the lobby when needed.
- Assists the Information and Technology Department with troubleshooting computer equipment issues.
- Assist with supervising outside contractors working within the Police Department on various projects.

Need to have:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Possession of, or ability to obtain an appropriate, valid Minnesota driver’s license.
- Ability to obtain and maintain emergency medical responder- 6 months of hire.

- Currently enrolled, enrolling, or recent graduate of a law enforcement education program.
- Experience working with animals.

Environmental Conditions:
Primarily an outside environment; While on duty incumbent may have exposure to injury, trauma, angry or violent individuals, animal bites, blood-borne and air-borne pathogens, traffic accidents, visual and emotional trauma, toxic chemicals, adverse road and weather conditions, and other hazardous conditions.
Physical Conditions:
Essential functions may require maintaining physical condition necessary for sitting, standing, or walking for prolonged periods; light to moderately heavy lifting and carrying; may be required to climb, stoop, and kneel in performance of job responsibilities; general manual dexterity; adequate vision, speech, and hearing required; must be able to operate assigned equipment.
