Rate of Pay: $17.02 - $19.41
Status: Open Until Filled

 
This is an entry-level position within the Tax division of the city Finance department. This position is responsible for processing and monitoring tax payments for accuracy and providing assistance to taxpayers regarding their tax bills. This position also provides the Finance department with updated tax information as needed.
  • Assists taxpayers by phone and in person with billing inquiries or verification of property ownership. Collects and processes tax payments through an electronic cash register or validating machine.
  • Updates the tax records for accuracy according to cash receipts collected and tax balance. Monitor tax record daily for discrepancies and make adjustments as needed to maintain accuracy. Keeps the computerized tax filing system updated and accurate. Also maintains the plat books with new maps and other related tax information.
  • Reconciles all payments for deposits and notifies the taxpayer of over- or under-payment of tax bills.
  • Communicates and provides property tax information to taxpayers, supervisor and Finance department as needed, verbally or through correspondence.
  • Updates the Georgia Execution Docket and maintains its accuracy by entering or removing tax records when changes in status occur. Responsible for editing delinquent tax information on the Georgia Execution Docket at the Cobb County Clerk’s office.
  • Works directly with the Cobb County Tax Assessor’s Office as it relates to adjustments to the digest and any other follow-up information needed to process corrections to tax bills.
  • Scans Homestead Exemption forms into the city computer and files original forms.
  • Processes and verifies information from the Personal Property digest and Real Property digest from the Cobb County Tax Assessor's Office.
  • Makes entries in tax digest of new accounts and updates of changed status properties (split or voided parcels).
  • Processes and monitors motor vehicle and mobile home payments from the Cobb County Tag Office. Maintains and updates tax information (including amount collected and billed) in the annual financial Report of Public Utilities.
  • Updates the AS 400 tax files system with new exemptions filed each year
  • Processes all returned mail and attempts to correct mailing address.
  • Processes new ownership and annexed property changes each year and forwards new exemption forms to new owners.
  • Keeps a log of all state exemptions granted or removed and information is forwarded to the State Revenue department each year.
Preferred Qualifications:
 
  • High school diploma or GED, plus three years of experience in a related environment working with financial data. Prefer minimum of one year of experience working in a government tax office as a clerk or higher level. Knowledge of tax structures and billing procedures in a governmental agency is preferred.
  • Proven computer skills and proficiency in using MS software. Experience required using these and other software to communicate, enter, and edit tax information as needed.
  • Ability to retrieve tax information from reference materials such as tax digests, plat books, and city and state code books.
  • Ability to accurately record alphanumeric information into computer or field ledgers in a fast-paced office environment. Must be proficient in using a calculator, cash register, fax machine, scanner, and other modern office equipment.
  • Ability to deal with the public in an effective and courteous manner. 
  • Ability to handle deadlines and multiple tasks while paying strict attention to detail in a calm and professional manner.
  • A background check, including credit and criminal history, is required at time of hire.
