Job Description

The City of Murphy's Police Department seeks to add a Certified Police Officer position to its' dynamic team! As a Certified Police Officer, you will be under the immediate direction of the Shift Sergeant (Shift Commander), or OIC (Officer-in-Charge) in the absence of the shift commander, to provide crime prevention and law enforcement services for the City of Murphy through proactive patrol, preliminary investigations, and traffic control duties in a designated area or assignment during duty hours, while modeling our core values of Murphy

Examples of Duties

  • Patrols a specific beat to promote public safety and enhance the quality of life in assigned area
  • Promotes a positive image in performing community-policing duties (community meetings, problem solving resources, etc.)
  • Conducts crime analysis and coordination with other shifts and divisions, such as CID
  • Regularly reviews crime trends as indicated on the PD's call tracking software, such as Crime Reports, and develops tactics and programs to respond to identified trends and hot spots
  • Responds to calls for police service (disturbances, burglaries, prowlers, suspicious persons, etc.) and takes necessary action
  • Secures crime scenes and arrests suspect(s) in criminal offenses of various types and levels
  • Directs traffic, enforces traffic laws, both state laws and city ordinances, issues citations and warnings, verbal or written, and investigates crashes
  • Completes crash reports including making appropriate diagrams of crash scenes and takes enforcement action as indicated via on-scene traffic crash investigation
  • Completes patrol, offense and arrest reports
  • Conducts in-field investigations of alleged criminal and non-criminal activities
  • Assists in conducting criminal investigations
  • Guards and transports prisoners
  • Testifies as a witness in court (traffic and criminal offenses)
  • Operates and maintains a police vehicle and duty related equipment
  • Attends training activities and receives classroom and field instruction in job related subjects to enhance and improve skills and abilities and meets all mandated training requirements as specified by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) for the maintenance of a licensed peace officer
  • Stores, tags, and logs evidence and recovered property
  • Maintains a positive friendly and effective working relationship with the general public and co-workers
  • Reports any unsafe, hazardous, or perilous conditions to proper authority
  • Adheres to the personnel, safety and departmental policies, procedures, and Administrative Orders
  • Performs other related duties as assigned
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES
  • Must have a general working knowledge of police officer and/or law enforcement regulations
  • Must have excellent communicative skills in the English language, both oral and written
  • Must possess knowledge of computer operations, stressing accuracy, speed, knowledge and usage of proper grammar
  • Understands and displays behaviors consistent with servant leadership
  • Understands and is conversant in the basics of community oriented policing, Broken Windows Theory, and basic and advanced crime prevention techniques
  • To perform the essential functions of the job, must have good hand-eye coordination to operate police equipment (vehicles, weapons, radios, etc.); have vision correctable to 20/20 binocular; be able to distinguish between red, green, and yellow in order to accurately describe suspects and vehicles and to identify traffic lights and sign colors; must be able to physically restrain a person, endure extended periods of exertion, and sit for long periods of time; to observe and remember names, faces, and details of incidents; must have ability to perform work in adverse environmental conditions; ability to follow verbal and written directives; to communicate courteously and effectively with other people; must exercise good judgment and make competent decisions; maintain confidentiality with criminal and investigative information

Typical Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • High School diploma or G.E.D required.
  • Must be 20 years and 180 days of age at the time of application.
  • Must be licensed as a peace officer in the state of Texas through TCOLE
  • Must possess a valid Texas Class C Driver's License without restrictions (except "A") required by date of appointment - driving record must be in compliance with City policy.
  • Two (2) years full-time police experience within the last five (5) years
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Required to work flexible hours and accept on-call duty and call out status
  • Must pass a pre-employment drug screen and/or pre-employment job performance assessment.
  • Must pass a pre-employment polygraph examination and a psychological evaluation.
  • Must be able to pass a background check on previous employment; motor vehicle record check; physical fitness test

  • Bachelor's Degree from an accredited university in Criminal Justice or related field

  • Retirement benefits provided through the Texas Municipal Retirement System. Mandatory contributions via payroll deduction - employee contributes 7% and the City matches 2 - 1.
  • Term Life Insurance plan of $20,000 paid for by the City of Murphy. Supplemental coverage is available for purchase by the employee.
  • Medical/Dental/Vision insurance. City pays the full premium for employees and provides a 50% premium contribution for qualified dependents. PPO plan with Blue Cross Blue Shield, Dental plan with Ameritas and Vision plan with VSP. Benefits are deducted pre-tax, see table below for rates.
  • Telemedicine, including a behavioral health component, fully funded by the City of Murphy
  • Flexible Spending Health and Dependent Care accounts available for employee contribution.
  • Long-term disability insurance paid by the City of Murphy.
  • Identity Protection plan available through My ID Care.
  • Longevity pay: All full-time employees receive $4.00 per month for each year of service beginning the month following the first full year of service.

  • Vacation: Two weeks (10 days) annually through the first five years, three weeks (15 days) annually from 5 years to 10 years, and four weeks (20 days) annually for 10 years of service and beyond. Time accrues incrementally each pay period.
  • Sick time: Two weeks (10 days) annually - accrued incrementally each pay period. Time can be rolled over each year to a maximum of 720 hours.
