CLASSIFICATION DESCRIPTION

CLASSIFICATION TITLE: SOLID WASTE WORKER TRANSFER STATION

PURPOSE OF CLASSIFICATION

The purpose of this classification is to perform unskilled to semi-skilled work to collect solid waste for the City. Serves as attendant groundskeeper for the Solid Waste Transfer Station and various facilities.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

The following duties are normal for this position. The omission of specific statements of the duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification. Other duties may be required and assigned.

Performs maintenance tasks related to solid waste collection; picks up, loads, hauls, and unloads debris and refuse; collects dead animals.

Walks behind or rides on sanitation truck on assigned route; loads refuse bags from street curb into truck; sorts materials for recycling; bales recyclables; reports any violations of refuse ordinances to supervisor.

Adheres to established safety procedures; monitors work environment and use of safety equipment to ensure safety of employees and other individuals; flags and directs traffic to ensure safety of crew and the traveling public as needed; and follows safety practices and wears protective gear. 

Cleans up area around litter containers, transfer station and in street ends.

Assists vehicle driver in cleaning equipment and performing preventive maintenance; assists in conducting pre- and post-trip inspections, including checking all fluids, gauges, lighting, mirrors, tires, body damage, seats and seatbelts, cleanliness of vehicle, etc.; reports all problems or necessary repairs to appropriate personnel immediately.

Communicates with supervisor, employees, other departments, the public, and other individuals as needed to coordinate work activities, review status of work, exchange information, or resolve problems.

Operates one or more of the following: hand tools, rake, broom, pitch fork; operates any other equipment as necessary to complete essential functions.

Operates a variety of varied-purpose equipment and tools, operates a commercial-grade pressure washer, lawn mower, weed eater, chain saw, blower, shovel, rakes, pitchfork, pry bar, or other equipment as needed.

ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS

Assists with special projects as requested. Performs other related duties as requested, assigned and required.

Requires hours on weekends, holidays and during storm-related events or natural disasters.

High school diploma or GED; some experience in manual labor work. Must possess a valid driver’s license.

Physical Ability: Tasks require the regular and sustained performance of moderately physically demanding work, typically involving some combination of climbing and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling, and that generally involves lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of moderately heavy objects and materials (20-50 pounds).

Sensory Requirements: Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate colors or shades of colors, sounds, odor, depth, texture, and visual cues or signals. Some tasks require the ability to communicate orally.

Environmental Factors: Performance of essential functions may require exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, rain, fumes, temperature and noise extremes, machinery, vibrations, electric currents, traffic hazards, toxic agents, or disease.
