Primary FunctionsThis is skilled technical, repair, and general maintenance work of an often-complex nature involving the properties and equipment of the Fire Department. Has responsibility for the performance of maintenance and repair work on the building, property, hydrants, and equipment of the Fire Department. This work is performed independently, but is subject to supervision while in progress or upon completion by a supervisor.
Typical Duties And Responsibilities
  • Repairs and paints fire hydrants, replaces missing caps, repacks top operating nuts, repairs and/or replaces main valves, drip valves and other hydrant parts.
  • Performs preventive maintenance and repairs on oil-fired furnaces, gas-fired furnaces and air conditioning units, within the various facilities of the New Haven Fire Department.
  • Performs repairs to plumbing, carpentry, painting and electrical systems of the buildings and facilities of the Fire Department.
  • Conducts inspections and diagnostic tests on equipment and systems.
  • Troubleshoots issues with equipment and systems.
  • Performs grounds maintenance work such as trash, debris, and snow removal.
  • Repairs and refills dry powder extinguishers and Scott bottles and repairs fire equipment tools.
  • Attends multiple-alarm fires and assists in support services as required.
  • Performs other related duties as required.
Education, Qualifications & ExperienceGraduation from high school; certification in a related field such as facilities management, building maintenance, or a trade school certification would be beneficial. A minimum of 2-3 years of experience in maintenance or a similar field. Possession of relevant technical certifications in areas such as HVAC, plumbing, electrical systems, or carpentry is desirable. Or, an equivalent combination of training and experience which provide the following knowledge, abilities and skills:

  • Mechanical aptitude and manual dexterity.
  • Skill in the repair and maintenance of mechanical, plumbing, electrical, and carpentry systems within a variety of buildings.
  • Ability to climb ladders and work at limited heights. Physical fitness and stamina to perform tasks that may require lifting, climbing, and working in various weather conditions.
  • Ability to learn the locations of streets, principal buildings, and other physical features of the City.
  • Ability to learn specific requirements related to the maintenance and repair of properties and equipment within the Fire Department.
  • Knowledge of safety regulations and compliance standards applicable to equipment and fire department facilities.
  • Ability to learn the maintenance and repair trades.
  • Ability to understand and work off of blueprints and drawings.
  • Basic computer skills for record-keeping, accessing online resources, using maintenance management systems, and communication; ability to maintain accurate records of maintenance activities, repairs, and inventory of supplies.
  • Ability to analyze problems, identify solutions, and implement effective repairs in a timely manner.
  • Ability to adapt to changing priorities and emergencies.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the public.

  • Must possess & maintain a valid Connecticut Driver’s License for appropriate vehicle operation.

XSALARY, BARGAINING UNIT & TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT
Hours of work: Mon-Fri, 35 hrs per week. 8am - 4pm (If called in outside of hours, will receive a minimum of 4 hours overtime)
  • Salary will receive a contractual increase of 3% effective July 1: Range 6, $68,297
This is a "General Fund," tested position.
This position is included in a collective bargaining agreement with Local 424, Unit 128, UPSEU.Bargaining agreements available to review HERE.
General Funded hires into this class shall not be covered by Social Security but rather the City pension, contributing 9% of salary.
Employment is contingent upon the successful completion of: (1) a pre-employment background check, (2) a pre-employment physical examination, including pre-employment drug screening accordance with the City’s Drug Free Workplace Policy*, and (3) a 120-day probationary period.
