The Division of Fleet Management strives to provide excellent customer service to all departments of the City of Norfolk by developing and administering a comprehensive structured preventive maintenance and repair program.
The Department of General Services, Fleet Management Division, is seeking an Automotive Repair Technician I. The Automotive Repair Technician diagnoses, troubleshoots, and performs major and minor repairs to equipment and vehicles in addition, performs wrecker operations and other duties such as cleaning the interior and exterior areas of the shop, ordering and picking up parts, and logging information into the computer.
  • Performs preventative maintenance and general repair to vehicles and equipment by performing inspections, evaluating performance, diagnosing the problem, and repairing or replacing parts. 
  • Diagnoses and repairs vehicles by using equipment and tools to properly locate and correct any problem areas. 
  • Performs other duties by retrieving city vehicles and towing, cleaning interior and exterior areas of the shop, ordering and picking up parts, and logging information into the computer.
  • Two years’ experience in automotive maintenance.
  • Knowledge of methods, practices and theory of vehicular maintenance and repair, and hydraulics. 
  • Knowledge of automotive maintenance and repair. 
  • Ability to use basic computer software, such as Microsoft Windows, and Fleet Management software. 
  • Ability to lift 75 pounds and work in dirty or hazardous areas.
Level of knowledge equivalent to four years of high school or equivalency.
Required:
  • One year of work experience performing automotive maintenance and repair duties.
The preferred candidate will possess:
  • ASE-Automotive Service Excellence Certification
  • VA State Safety Inspection license
  • Vocational/Technical School education level
  • Valid Driver's License required.
  • Valid CDL (Class A ) Driver's License must be obtained within six (6) months of hire.
Signing Bonus: This position is eligible for a one-time $5,000 signing bonus for new hires. Work Location1188 Lance Road Norfolk, VA 23502Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 6:30AM -3:00PM, 40hrs/week
