City of Oak Creek is Hiring a Fire Inspector Near Oak, WI

Located along the western shore of Lake Michigan, Oak Creek is in the midst of a development boom and is one of the fastest growing cities in southeastern Wisconsin. In two decades, the City’s population grew over 25 percent, and substantial growth and development is projected into the future. Adding vibrancy and a sense of place to the community, the City’s Drexel Town Square features a modern mixed-use development anchored by a civic center plaza, City Hall, and Library facility. The City’s elected leadership strategically invests in Oak Creek’s future as demonstrated projects already underway. The Oak Creek Fire Department provides fire, emergency medical, rescue and prevention services to City residents. The department provides services through its three fire stations, protecting a community that covers over 28 square miles and has a population of over 36,000 people. The part-time Fire Inspector position independently performs site inspections of various occupancy types to determine compliance with applicable fire and life safety codes and standards. The position provides critical support to fire prevention services in the community.
EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
Inspects occupancies for fire code violations as required by Wisconsin State Statues and Oak Creek Municipal Code. Also inspects egress elements, and emergency access. Writes technical reports on findings, issues violation notices, conducts re-inspections, recommends the issuance of citations or re-inspection fees, processes complaints and referrals, and follows through on the compliance process. Provides input and consults property owners on code compliance issues associated with potential renovations and alterations. Determines operational readiness of existing fixed suppression systems, fire detection and alarm systems, and portable fire extinguishers so that items are in an operational state, maintenance is documented, and deficiencies are identified, documented, and reported. Verifies code compliance for incidental storage, handling, and use of flammable and combustible liquids, and gases and hazardous materials, given field observations and inspection guidelines so that applicable codes and standards are addressed and deficiencies are identified, documented, and reported. Participates in legal proceedings, as needed. Provides input for and creates public fire safety programs. Responsible for dealing with or notifying the proper authority when violations of City Codes and Ordinances rules are observed on the job.
SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION
Work is performed mostly in field settings. Employees in this classification are required to drive to perform inspections of buildings located throughout the city. Employees must be able to physically access all parts of a building, including the ability to go up and down stairs, crouch and kneel in cramped/confined spaces, climb ladders, walk over uneven terrain. Ability to work in difficult conditions and all types of weather. Ability to work in high places and in hazardous areas.
