Description

GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF POSITION

Employee shall be employed in a trainee status with the term lasting from the Employee’s initial employment date until completion of Firefighter/EMT certification and Ocala Fire Rescue orientation.

The initial employment date shall be the day the Employee is hired on with Ocala Fire Rescue on the employment date. The trainee period will begin on the initial employment date, continue through the time Employee is enrolled in MTC at the Florida State Fire College and finish when the Employee successfully completes Ocala Fire Rescue’s orientation period.

During this trainee period Employee shall be an “at will” employee who may be terminated from employment for any reason at any time not otherwise prohibited by State or Federal law.

Upon completion of the trainee period set forth herein, Employee’s status shall be that of any other dual certified Firefighter employed by the City consistent with Employee’s rank and time of service, except as otherwise provided for in this Agreement. It is anticipated by the City that Employee will successfully complete the Firefighter/EMT training during the initial term.

Following graduation, the employee will successfully sit for and pass the Florida State Firefighter exam, EMT National Registry, and complete, to the City’s satisfaction, Ocala Fire Rescue’s orientation period on schedule. If for any reason, Employee fails or falls behind on the schedule for completion of these requirements, the City may, at its option immediately terminate this Agreement.

This is a non-supervisory technical position involving duties and responsibilities at an educational setting which may require the highest level of physical exertion and agility on a regular basis.

The trainee is required to maintain a high level of professionalism at all times, as all interactions, performance, and attitudes will represent the City of Ocala and Ocala Fire Rescue.

Examples of Duties

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Duties may include but are not limited to the following:

1. Reporting to work or school at the appointed hour, as scheduled, and working the entire assigned shift or day with 100% compliance. Exhibiting timeliness and preparedness for all scheduled training activities, including but not limited to school functions, clinicals, and departmental scheduled duties.

2. Following oral and written instructions. Completing all tasks assigned as directed by Ocala Fire Rescue and/or the educational institution.

3. Obtain Florida State certification(s) as a Firefighter.

4. Obtain National Registry Certification as an EMT.

5. Provide accurate and detailed updates when requested by assigned Officer.

6. Participating in mandatory physical fitness programs and attending training sessions.

7. Maintaining the agility and dexterity necessary for proper firefighting equipment use and deployment of techniques.

8. Promoting public education and safety through courteous and effective communication during interactions including, but not limited to, station tours, school presentations, and lectures to civic groups.

9. Communicating effectively and courteously with co-workers. Maintaining a positive work environment in close living quarters and during challenging conditions.

10. Perform any other related duties as required or assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

High school graduate or GED.

REQUIRED CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

Must possess a valid Florida Driver's License with an acceptable driving record.

PREFERRED CERTIFICATIONS, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

Florida State Certified Firefighter or EMT or Paramedic.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring and training employees; planning, assigning and directing work; appraising performance, rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

Ability to effectively communicate information and respond to questions in person-to-person and small groups situations.

Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide numbers. Ability to perform these mathematical skills using money and other forms of measurement.

CRITICAL THINKING SKILLS

Ability to use common sense understanding in order to carry out detailed written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few known variables in situations of a routine nature.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

Under immediate supervision, with SHORT ASSIGNMENTS of work at frequent interval with REGULAR CHECK of work.

MENTAL DEMAND

MODERATE; Operations requiring almost continuous attention, but work is sufficiently repetitive that a habit cycle is formed; intermittent directed thinking to determine or select materials, equipment or operations.

USE OF MACHINES, EQUIPMENT AND/OR COMPUTER

Occasional use of complex machines and equipment (desktop/laptop computer and software, road and production machines and equipment, etc.)

ACCURACY

Probable errors of internal scope readily detected in normal course of work by standard check or routine crosscheck within a single department or office. Errors resulting from inaccuracy would create Minor confusion, delay or expense to correct.

PUBLIC CONTACT

Frequent contacts with general public, patrons, or other outside representatives, wherein the manner of handling these contacts has a bearing on the organization’s position and

operation.

EMPLOYEE CONTACT

Contacts occasionally with others beyond immediate associates, but generally of a routine nature. May obtain, present or discuss data, but only as it pertains to an immediate and specific assignment.
