City of Ocala is Hiring a Code Enforcement Officer Near Ocala, FL

JOB
This position is responsible for enforcing the City of Ocala Code of Ordinance sections, along with state and local laws that pertain to nuisances, building, zoning, signage, business tax receipts and contractor certification. This includes the permitting regulations for building, signage, sidewalk cafes, and alcohol location permits, etc. This job may require a flexible work schedule and intermittent work on a weekend day when required. Reports to Code Enforcement and Parking Manager.
EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
1. Conducts field investigations and inspections to insure compliance with local ordinances and state laws pertaining to all aspects of nuisances, building, zoning, licensing, contractors' certification, permitting, and alcoholic beverage regulations. This duty is performed daily.
2. Involves extensive record keeping, and the ability to testify with specific detail of violations and corrections to be utilized in hearings with the Municipal Code Enforcement Board, Special Magistrate, Department of Business and Professional Regulation or civil court proceedings when necessary. This duty is performed daily.
3. Must be able to collect required information that could lead to the issuance of an inspection/search warrant when necessary and be familiar with documents related to liens, permits and agreements. This duty is performed weekly.
4. Must be familiar with computer programs to access permit and contractor computer files, as well as inspector computer logs. This duty is performed daily.
5. Reviews and monitors license and certification applications with the permitting staff. This duty is performed weekly.
6. Maintains a daily digital log and scanned files regarding complaints in the computer software to conduct re-inspections. This duty is performed daily.
7. Involves extensive interaction with the general public, other City Departments, Department of Business and Professional Regulations, and other public and law enforcement agencies. This duty is performed weekly.
8. Educate property owners on potential violations related to their property. This position must use problem solving and effective communication skills on a regular basis. This duty is performed weekly.
9. Performs other work and assists other inspectors and staff as needed. This duty is performed weekly.
Perform any other related duties as required or assigned.
SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION
COMMUNICATION SKILLS
Ability to read a limited number of words and recognize similarities and differences between words and between series of numbers; Ability to write and speak simple sentences as a means for basic communication. Ability to read and understand simple instructions, short correspondence, notes, letters and memos; Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to read and understand documents such as policy manuals, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals; Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to effectively communicate information and respond to questions in person-to-person and small group situations with customers, clients, general public and other employees of the organization.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS
Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
CRITICAL THINKING SKILLS
Ability to utilize common sense understanding in order to carry out written, oral or diagrammed instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving several known variables in situations of a routine nature.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
Under general supervision where standard practice enables the employee to proceed alone on routine work, referring all questionable cases to supervisor.
PLANNING
Considerable responsibility with regard to general assignments in planning time, method, manner, and/or sequence of performance of own work; may also occasionally assist in the planning of work assignments performed by others within a limited area of operation.
DECISION MAKING
Performs work operations which permit frequent opportunity for decision-making of minor importance and also frequent opportunity for decision-making of major importance; the latter of which would affect the work operations of other employees and/or clientele to a moderate degree.
MENTAL DEMAND
Moderate mental demand. Operations requiring almost continuous attention, but work is sufficiently repetitive that a habit cycle is formed; operations requiring intermittent directed thinking to determine or select materials, equipment or operations where variable sequences may be selected by the employee.
ANALYTICAL ABILITY / PROBLEM SOLVING
Moderately repetitive. Activities with slight variation using a definite set of processes or directions with some degree of supervision. Choice of learned things in situations which conform to clearly established patterns and modes.

ACCURACY
Probable errors of internal and external scope would have a moderate effect on the operational efficiency of the organizational component concerned. Errors might possibly go undetected for a considerable period of time, thereby creating an inaccurate picture of an existing situation. Could cause further errors, losses, or embarrassment to the organization. The possibility for error is always present due to requirements of the job.
PUBLIC CONTACT
Regular contacts with patrons, either within the office or in the field. May also involve occasional self-initiated contacts to patrons. Lack of tact and judgment may result in a limited type of problem for the organization.
EMPLOYEE CONTACT
Contacts of considerable importance within the department or office, such as those required in coordination of effort, or frequent contacts with other departments or offices, generally in normal course of performing duties. Requires tact in discussing problems and presenting data and making recommendations, but responsibility for action and decision reverts to others.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
Must be able to find, read and interpret sections of the City of Ocala Code of Ordinances, Florida State Statutes, and other regulations that are enforced through this division. Must be able to conduct web searches of various web locations, including: Secretary of State for various states, County Clerk of the Court, Property Appraisers Offices, and Federal web locations as well to obtain relevant information to compile case information. Must have the ability to organize and coordinate scheduled inspections, re- inspections, and generate inspections in the field. Must have extensive knowledge of the City quadrant system as 70% of the normal workday involves patrolling and visually monitoring all areas of the City to identify any violations of codes and ordinances.
This position requires the inspector have the ability to be a self-starter and work with little direct supervision. Must be able to recognize problems and make on the spot judgments and decisions in the field involving violations and life safety requirements. Must have the ability to remain calm and professional in stressful and confrontational situations
