City of Palm Bay is Hiring a Water Treatment Plant Operator A, B, C Near Palm, FL

Graduation from high school supplemented by college level course work in chemistry, biology, math, or related courses, and 1 to 2 years of experience in water purification treatment plant operation and mechanical repair work; Must possess a valid Florida Driver's License and have and maintain an acceptable driving record.
A License - 5 to 7 years of experience ($48,807 starting salary)
B License - 3 to 5 years of experience ($46,483 starting salary)
C License - 1 to 2 years of experience ($42,162 starting salary)
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Level "A, B or C" certification as a water treatment plant operator from the State of Florida Department of Environmental Resources.
Code 1: Essential Employees may be required to work during an undeclared emergency and/or declared emergency. On an incident by incident basis, the employee's Department Head will make the determination as to who will be required to work.
Under general supervision, performs technical work in the operation of the water purification or wastewater treatment plant, ensuring that it operates within applicable regulations. Work involves performing preventive mainte¬nance and repair of water purification or wastewater treatment equipment, and reading various gauges and meters, collecting lab samples, and performing required analysis and tests, which are recorded on charts and graphs, and inspecting the plant for efficient operation of equipment. Independent judgment and initiative are required in making decisions and coordinating the proper operation of equipment. Employee must exercise tact and courtesy in frequent contact with plant personnel, and is responsible for performing general maintenance tasks including general cleaning of the plant and maintain¬ing the immediate grounds. Reports to the Chief Operator of either the water purification plant or wastewater treatment plant, as assigned.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Performs responsible and effective on-site management and supervision over personnel and plant functions.
Responsible for reporting to the Chief Operator or his/her designee as soon as possible, but within 24 hours, following the occurrence of any serious plant breakdown or condition causing or likely to cause an unsafe treatment plant operation, or any discharge of water or wastewater not in accordance with current F.A.C. rules.
Monitors and maintains proper surveillance of all water purification and wastewater plant processes, equipment and controls to ensure efficient operation of the plant and compliance with applicable federal, state and local laws, ordinances and regulations.
Monitors gauges, meters, control panels, and process variables, making changes as determined by flow, controls, instrumentation analysis, calculations, and visual observations; checks filters, chlorinators and chemical feed discharges; reads meters, gauges and dials, observes variations in operating conditions, interprets meter and gauge readings, and maintains reports.
Collects water or wastewater samples at various stages of the treatment process; submits water samples to laboratory or analyzes wastewater samples, as required.
Submits all required reports accurately and in the manner required by the Department of Environmental Regulation.
Adjusts equipment to regulate flow rates or modify treatment process in accordance with need determined by observations and tests.
Performs preventive maintenance and minor repair of plant equipment, including the lubrication of motors and pumps.
Maintains an operation and maintenance log(s) for each plant, on-site in a location accessible to 24-hour inspection, protected from weather damage, and current to the last operation and maintenance performed. The log(s) shall contain a minimum of 12 months of data at all times and shall be maintained in accordance with existing Department of Environmental Protection rules.
Maintains records of plant operation and prepares and submits related reports; monitors and participates in shut-downs and start-ups of equipment as directed.
Advises supervisor of general plant operations and any non-compliance situations.
Performs preventative maintenance and minor repair of plant equipment, including the lubrication of motors and pumps.
Maintains general cleanliness of the plant and performs various grounds keeping tasks such as mowing grass, weeding, and edging.
Receives complaints and/or inquiries from Utilities customers and/or the general public pertaining to Utilities and personnel activities, policies, procedures, etc., and directs such maintenance work as warranted by customer inquiry or complaint.
May be assigned to shift work. May be required to work weekends and holidays. May be assigned to either the water or wastewater plant. May be required to respond to after hour call.
ADDITIONAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Assists and advises Water or Wastewater Operator - Trainees and/or those not dual (water/wastewater) certified, in various operational routines and procedures, ensuring adherence to established policies, procedures and standards.
Performs other related work as required.
