City of Panama City Beach is Hiring a Swim Instructor (Seasonal) Near PCB, FL

This position provides quality swim instruction to participants of all ages at the beginning, intermediate, and advanced levels.

  • Teaching swimming lessons to beginning, intermediate, and advanced students.
  • Maintains appropriate records and completes necessary paperwork.
  • Provides customer service; responds promptly to customer needs; solicits customer feedback to improve service; responds to requests for service and assistance.
  • Provides emergency care and treatment as required until the arrival of emergency medical services.
  • Performs various maintenance duties as directed to maintain a clean and safe facility which may include cleaning benches, chairs, tables, walkways, decks, restrooms, floors, lockers, etc.
  • Prepares and maintains appropriate activity reports.
  • Performs related duties.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Ability to read, write and perform mathematical calculations at a level commonly associated with the completion of high school or equivalent preferred. Must be at least 15 years of age at time of employment.
  • Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years.
  • Must pass a required swim test.
  • To successfully complete the American Red Cross Safety Training for Swim Coaches within 30 days of employment.

KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION

  • Knowledge of swimming instruction principles and practices.
  • Knowledge of pool safety guidelines.
  • Knowledge of water rescue techniques.
  • Skill in the provision of customer services.
  • Skill in delivery of swim education to all ages and all skill levels.
  • Skill in the completion of reports.
  • Skill in oral and written communication.
  • General Expectations (not a comprehensive list)
    1st year team member – master safety protocols and the responsibilities related to the job description.
    2nd year team member – effectively provide mentoring to new team members as assigned, assist in training exercises.
    3rd year team member – independently conduct in-service training as assigned.
    4th year team member – able to mentor, train, and provide leadership to peers, support leadership in staff development typical of a tam member in a lead role.
    5th year team member – considered a senior team member, an expert in job responsibilities and training abilities.
    Beyond the 5th year team member – the highest standard of skills, character, and leadership qualities are expected.

SUPERVISORY CONTROLS

The Aquatics Specialist assigns work in terms of somewhat general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with instructions and established procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the final results.

GUIDELINES

Guidelines include city and department policies and procedures, Swim Instructor best practices and Red Cross Water Safety and Rescue protocols, and the employee handbook. These guidelines are generally clear and specific but may require some interpretation in application.

  • The work consists of related swim instruction duties. The unique needs and skills of each student contribute to the complexity of the position.
  • The purpose of this position is to provide swimming instruction at a public pool. Success in this position contributes to the provision of swimming lessons to community members.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • The work is typically performed while standing, walking, bending, crouching or stooping. The employee occasionally lifts light and heavy objects, climbs ladders, uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, distinguishes between shades of color, and utilizes the sense of smell.
  • The work is typically performed in an outdoor aquatic facility. The employee is exposed to noise, dust, dirt, grease, machinery with moving parts, and irritating chemicals. Work may be performed outdoors in cold or inclement weather. Work may require the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, gloves, etc.
