Job Details Summary of Duties: Under general supervision, the Park Maintenance Assistant Supervisor is responsible for supervising the daily work activities of the crews working in their respective functional area at multiple sites, which includes parks, medians/rights-of-way, athletic fields or public building grounds.
Examples Of ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS Management reserves the rights to add, modify, change, or rescind the work assignments of different positions and to make reasonable accommodations so that qualified employees can perform the essential functions of the job.
  • Monitors and provides appropriate documentation of subordinates’ performance; assists in the preparation of written performance evaluations.
  • Plans and monitors the status of the daily and weekly work activities of subordinates; documents work activities in the city’s management software system.
  • Secures necessary supplies and equipment for specific projects and assists in purchasing responsibilities.
  • Maintains appropriate written records of labor, materials, and equipment.
  • Assists in the investigation of and response to citizen complaints/inquiries.
  • May be subject to on-call duty.
  • Regular and consistent attendance for the assigned work schedule is essential.
  • Supervises crews involved in maintaining irrigation at athletic fields and public grounds. Essential job functions include irrigation programming, irrigation repairs, horticultural activities, tournament/special event support, and renovation projects.
  • Programs and coordinates the computerized irrigation system with scheduled athletic games and activities and other maintenance work.
  • Oversees preventive maintenance and minor repairs of assigned irrigation related equipment and vehicles.
  • Participates in and leads the work of a specific functional area of irrigation and/or sports field establishment and preparation.
  • Assists in the development of watering programs to provide appropriate level of precipitation to a variety of plant materials.
  • Monitors data provided daily by the Motorola ICC program to determine effectiveness of city-wide parks irrigation systems.
  • Creates workload for irrigation staff for daily maintenance and repair of Parks and public building.
Marginal Duties
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Typical Decisions: The incumbent must determine work priorities and oversee the work of assigned personnel and evaluate employee performance against established standards.
Minimum Qualifications Knowledge of: Grounds, landscape and sports field maintenance methods and procedures; equipment used in grounds maintenance; irrigation system programming, maintenance and installation; chemical application techniques; work safety standards, policies, and practices
Skill in: Communicating clearly both verbally and in writing; operating a personal computer using Microsoft Office applications. When assigned to Irrigation, must have skill in irrigation programming software (Motorola, hunter, RainBird, Irritrol, etc.). Skill in completing preventive maintenance and minor repairs on common grounds maintenance tools, implements and equipment; training and leading the work of others; reading and interpreting blueprints and schematics.
Education: High school diploma or GED equivalent.
Experience: Three (3) years of experience in grounds maintenance and irrigation maintenance/repair, which includes six (6) months, experience leading the work activities of subordinate personnel.
Any work related experience resulting in acceptable proficiency levels in the above Minimum Qualifications is an acceptable substitute for the above specified education and experience requirements
Licenses and Certifications: Texas Irrigation License required (prior to employment). Texas Class C Driver License required (prior to employment). Landscape Irrigation Auditing Certificate required. Texas Non-Commercial Pesticide Applicator’s License is preferred. Texas Turfgrass Association CPTM preferred.
Conditions of Employment: Must pass a drug test, driver license check, criminal history background check, periodic CJIS background check (for positions requiring access into Police buildings) and social security number verification check.
Physical Demands and Working Conditions: Must possess mobility to work in and around city buildings, parks, medians & rights of way, to operate equipment and motor vehicles on terrain and streets; strength, stamina and mobility to perform light to medium physical work and around machines, and to operate varied hand and power tools and specialized equipment; vision to read printed materials and a computer screen; hearing and speech to communicate in person and over the telephone or radio. The job involves fieldwork requiring frequent walking in operational areas to identify problems or hazards. Finger dexterity is needed to access, enter and retrieve data using a computer keyboard or calculator and to operate above mentioned tools and equipment. Positions in this classification bend, stoop, kneel, and reach when completing maintenance, repairs, and various daily tasks. Employees must possess the ability to lift, carry, push, and pull and pull materials and objects weighing up to 50 pounds, or heavier weights with the use of proper equipment.
Employees work in and around buildings and facilities and are exposed to loud noise levels, cold and hot temperatures, inclement weather conditions, road hazards, vibration, dust, mechanical and/or electrical hazards, and hazardous physical substances and fumes.
