What are the responsibilities and job description for the Fire Lieutenant position at CITY OF PLEASANTON?
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
- Responds to fire alarms in an assigned district; directs the route to be taken to the fire and determines what equipment and apparatus are necessary; makes decisions as to the best methods of extinguishing fires and directs use of firefighting equipment.
- Answers telephone calls and relays information as needed regarding instructions and location of alarms.
- Responds to and renders assistance in emergency cases.
- Ensures general maintenance work in the upkeep of fire department property; cleans and washes walls and floors; makes minor repairs to property and equipment; washes, hangs, and dries hose; washes, cleans, polishes, and tests apparatus. Keeps records of such actions.
- Participates in training activities and instruction sessions.
- Performs pre-fire and code enforcement inspections.
- Performs various public information and education tasks.
- Acquires and retains a thorough knowledge of the City, including streets, buildings, water supply, unusual hazards and related items.
- Supervises laying those hose lines, directing and varying the pressure of water streams, placing of ladders, ventilation of buildings, rescue operations, administering of first aid and placement of salvage covers.
- Ensures that all station equipment is returned to the proper place after a fire has been extinguished and that all equipment is in working order at all times.
- Supervises cleaning of quarters, equipment and apparatus at a fire station and conducts roll call, inspects personnel and maintains discipline; transmits orders and information to firefighters.
- May respond to emergency calls for specialized service such as hazardous materials, confined space rescue, extrication and technical rescues that include high angle, below grade, swift water, trench, and collapse rescues.
- Maintains records such as company journal, daily log and company personnel records and makes out other reports and forms as required.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
