City of Raleigh Municipal Government is Hiring a Crew Supervisor Near Raleigh, NC

If so, the City of Raleigh Solid Waste Services Department is seeking a highly resourceful, adaptable, multi-tasker with solid critical thinking and communications skills for our Crew Supervisor position.
Our department - consisting of over 185 employees - is committed to providing high quality waste management, disposal, and recycling services for over 125,000 valued customers. As an essential and critical service, we take great pride in our role in the preservation and protection of the community’s natural resources and sustainable growth.
The Crew Supervisor position is assigned to the Operations Division of the Solid Waste Services Department. The primary purpose of this role is to provide daily oversight and supervision of a line of service for the solid waste operations. Assignments may change based on skill set and needs of the department.
Duties And Responsibilities
  • Supervises staff including conducting performance evaluations, coordinating training, and implementing hiring, discipline, and termination procedures
  • Foster transparency in communication, decision-making, and planning to encourage Crew Leader engagement. Crew Supervisors are responsible for sharing information upward, downward, and laterally in their chain of command
  • Coordinates and schedules resources for maintenance and operations of assigned projects, events, responses to weather or unplanned events, and/or other departmental/functional needs; monitors timelines and adherence to schedules
  • Conducts inspections and monitors progress, safety and/or completion of work; performs quality assurance checks to ensure compliance with established procedures, standards and/or regulations; identifies and initiates resolution of issues; follows up on corrective actions to ensure proper work completion. Responsible for ensuring Fleet availability to ensure Crew Leaders have the resources to execute their route responsibilities
  • Responsible for monitoring attendance and punctuality of staff. Conduct daily meetings with Crew Leaders and Operations Supervisors to plan for operational assignments based on attendance making necessary adjustments for route completion
  • Assists in the training and development of staff on equipment, safety and operational practices and procedures. Work collaboratively with Crew Leaders to develop employees for performance and/or promotional opportunities.
  • Thoroughly investigate the recommend disciplinary action(s) from Crew Leaders and act on it based on consistency, fairness and the City’s progressive discipline procedures
  • Maintains and oversees inventory of materials, tools and supplies; research product and expense information; initiates replacement of required inventory; prepares and maintains records and documentation related to assigned operational area
  • Out in the Field Experience: Expected to conduct regular route audits to gain experience and collaborate with Crew Leaders during route visits, observations, audits, inspections, etc.
  • Responsibility, Accountability, Consistency: Responsible to hold themselves and drivers accountable to these understandings and exercises them consistently, fairly and in good faith
Typical QualificationsEducation and Experience: High School Diploma or GED and five years of maintenance experience
OR
An equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above, unless otherwise subject to any other requirements set forth in law or regulation.
License And Certifications
  • Valid North Carolina Class C Driver’s license with a satisfactory driving record, or the ability to obtain within 60 days of hire
  • Valid North Carolina Class B Commercial Driver’s License with a satisfactory driving record, or the ability to acquire it within 60 days of hire

ADA And Other RequirementsPositions in this class typically require stooping, kneeling, reaching, standing, walking, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions.
Medium WorkExerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
Working ConditionsWork is performed in both the field and in an indoor office environment with moderate exposure to hazardous physical conditions (such as mechanical parts, electrical currents, vibration, etc.); moderate exposure to atmospheric conditions (such as fumes, odors, dusts, gases, poor ventilation, etc.); moderate exposure to hazardous materials (such as chemicals, blood and other body fluids); moderate exposure to environmental conditions (such as disruptive people, imminent danger, or a threatening environment); and moderate exposure to extreme temperatures and intense noise.
