ANIMAL SERVICES KENNEL ATTENDANT (Part Time)
JOB SUMMARY:
Under general supervision, provide care for the shelter animals including feeding, watering, exercising grooming and cleaning cages of all types. Assist Animal Services Officers and other staff as requested. Monitor and observe animals for signs of aggression, illness and provide customer support as needed. Works rotating shifts including weekends.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
Provide assistance to customers wishing to adopt animals. Escort customers as needed and respond to animal related questions. Receive and evaluate animals left at the shelter. Provide care for all animals left in the shelter including feeding, cleaning and monitoring animal behavior. Report conditions of animals including implementing precautionary measures to prevent disease transmission. Must be able to accurately mix deodorizers and disinfectants and apply according to label directions. Must continually clean and disinfect animal pens, floors and related areas. Provide support as requested by other animal services staff including assisting with euthanasia, disposal of deceased animals and maintenance of the pathological incinerator. Provide office assistance, light data entry of animal related information into shelter database and perform other office assignments as needed. Perform minor repairs to the shelter and equipment used at the shelter. When assigned, respond to public requests for removal of deceased animals from the streets, resident homes and at veterinary clinics. Prepare reports for supervision as requested. Lift and/or carry up to 50 pounds (i.e. animals, feed, cages, carcasses, etc.). Stand, bend, lift, and/or pursue stray animals. Deal with the public on a daily basis. Communicate courteously and effectively with other City employees, officials, and the public. Work at shelter-sponsored events and during weekends and evenings.
OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS:
Keep animal holding areas clean, safe and neat.
REQUIRED EDUCATION, DEGREES, CERTIFICATES, AND/OR LICENSES:
High school diploma, Texas Driver's License, Class C, required.
EXPERIENCE, TRAINING, KNOWLEDGE, AND SKILLS:
Must be able to deal with the public and fellow employees in a tactful and considerate manner. Must be able to do minor repair work related to an animal shelter. Be able to work a rotating shift including some nights and weekends. Maintain accurate records. Must be able to safely feed and handle a wide variety of animals. Perform lifting of feed and litter. Must be able to work independently. Must be concerned and interested in providing humane treatment for animals.
