Certified Water/Wastewater Operator
Anticipated hiring range: $30.37-$35.37 per hour dependent upon certifications.
Operator-in-Training Anticipated hiring rate: $27.14 per hour
*Certification based pay increases as required certifications are obtained.
This position will remain open until filled with application review beginning December 27, 2024.
Virtual interviews are tentatively scheduled for January 3, 2025 and in-person interviews are tentatively scheduled for January 13. 2025.
The Water/Wastewater Operator performs critical functions in the operation and maintenance of the municipal water distribution system, sanitary sewer collection system, and activated sludge wastewater treatment plant. This role includes monitoring water quality, ensuring compliance with all applicable regulations, repairing equipment, and conducting laboratory testing. The position also involves maintaining accurate records, preparing reports, and collaborating with relevant governing agencies to meet operational and compliance standards.

Must be able to work flexible hours. Occasionally requires nights, weekends and respond to emergency call outs.
- Maintain water pressure and levels for system efficiency.
- Calibrate chemical feed equipment and ensure compliance with DNR standards.
- Perform daily water sampling and testing for fluoride and chlorine; conduct periodic bacterial and raw water sampling.
- Inspect, repair, and replace motors, pumps, control panels, and storage tanks.
- Address customer inquiries with professionalism and courtesy.
- Assist in the repair or replacement of water mains, valves, hydrants, and other infrastructure.
- Perform hydrant and valve maintenance, fire flow testing, and water meter services.
- Maintain inventory and records and prepare state-required reports.
Wastewater System Operations
- Oversee the operation of the wastewater treatment plant in compliance with WPSC, WDNR, EPA, and other regulatory requirements.
- Conduct laboratory analysis to monitor plant operations and make necessary adjustments.
- Coordinate sludge hauling with regional facilities and ensure compliance with safety regulations.
- Operate and maintain sewer jetter/vacuum equipment, sewer televising equipment, and treatment plant systems.
- Support the laboratory’s quality assurance programs and maintain procedural documentation.
Minimum
- Graduation from high school or GED.
- Valid Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) or must obtain within 6months of hire.
- Certified Operator – must have either Wisconsin Grade 1 with subclass G and D Water Certification or Wisconsin Wastewater Operator Certification at Basic Level with one of the following subclasses A1, B,C,D,L,P,SS at time of hire. All additional required certifications must be obtained within 36 months of hire date.
- Operator-in-Training – if no certifications at time of hire either Wisconsin Grade 1 with subclass G and D Water Certification or Wisconsin Wastewater Operator Certification at Basic Level with one of the following subclasses A1, B,C,D,L,P,SS must be obtained within one year of hire. All additional required certifications must be obtained within 48 months of hire date.
- Two years of experience in municipal water treatment, distribution systems, sanitary sewer collection, or wastewater treatment operations.
Working Conditions
- Work involves exposure to wet, humid, and occasionally hazardous environments.
- Requires physical activities such as climbing ladders, lifting to 75 pounds, and working in confined spaces.
