The City of Roanoke is seeking a Business License Inspector/Auditor to inspect and investigate business establishments to secure compliance with the municipal license tax ordinance. Job responsibilities include but are not limited to ensuring that any person, trade, occupation, professional or business conducting business activity in the City is in compliance with city and state tax laws and ordinances; processing and issuing appropriate business licenses according to the business activity being performed; and maintaining business license files. Bachelor's degree from four-year college or university with a degree in business, accounting, finance or other related field; three to five years related experience and/or training in tax compliance enforcement and effective customer service; or equivalent combination of education and experience is required. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned. Ensures that any person, trade, occupation, professional or business conducting business activity in the City is in compliance with city and state tax laws and ordinances Processes and issues appropriate business licenses according to the business activity being performed Maintains business license files Handles inquires regarding business license requirements and assists taxpayers in completing forms as needed Examines and audits taxpayers' books, records, financial statements, reports and other papers to verify proper reporting and assessment Conducts field investigations/inspections to insure compliance with business license regulations Receipts and seizes commodities in violation of tax ordinance Appears in court as needed Prepares daily and monthly reports Assists with departmental projects as assigned SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES This job has no supervisory responsibilities.QUALIFICATIONS To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. REASONING ABILITY Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, or oral form. Ability to enforce tax ordinances fairly and objectively. CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS Must possess a valid appropriate driver's permit issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia.
