Job Summary

The City of Rockville, Maryland (City) is seeking friendly, dependable individuals to work part-time, unbenefited as a Theatre Technician Specialist. This position involves supporting the day-to-day operations of the F. Scott Fitzgerald Theatre & Social Hall, as well as off-site City venues and properties as needed. Theatre Technician Specialists provide essential technical support and assistance for a variety of events, including rehearsals, performances, and other activities, along with coordinating and implementing technical requests from user groups. Applicants must be comfortable working different types of events and with diverse groups of people. This year-round position offers flexible hours, including evenings, weekends, and some holidays.

Essential Job Functions

  • Assists with the theatrical technical needs of the F. Scott Fitzgerald Theatre and Social Hall and City events, including, but not limited to, changeovers, rehearsals, performances, events, and maintenance.
  • Completes and distributes written Tech Reports for rehearsals, performances, and events.
  • Coordinates and implements user group technical requests with advice and direction from the theater’s full-time staff.
  • Conducts all work using City, Civic Center Complex, and F. Scott Fitzgerald Theatre safety requirements, policies, and procedures, as well as general entertainment industry best practices.
  • Troubleshoots issues with equipment, lights, sound, etc.
  • Acts as technical supervisor for user groups in the absence of full-time staff.
  • Explain policies and procedures for use of the facility to diverse individuals and groups.
  • Respond to emergency situations by determining and implementing appropriate procedures.
  • Inspect facility before, during, and after functions for cleanliness and safety.
  • General cleaning to help support an event, including trash and recycling removal from venue.
  • Restocking various venue areas, including restrooms and kitchens.
  • Performs other duties as required.

Qualifications

  • Ability to lift, push, or maneuver up to 50lbs.
  • Ability to climb ladders and work in high places.
  • Work independently and without direct supervision.
  • Ability to work well and collaborate as a part of a team.
  • Must be willing to work flexible work hours, including evenings, weekends, some holidays, and sometimes on short notice.
  • Punctual, reliable, dependable, and consistent in work output.
  • Excellent customer service, communication skills (written and verbal), and administrative skills.
  • Take a proactive approach to risk management and facility and guest safety.
  • Ability to deal patiently and politely with facility and client problems and complaints.
  • Ability to resolve conflicts in a professional manner.
  • Ability to work beyond scheduled work shift end time if an event runs past contracted time.
  • Have personal e-mail address and cell phone.
  • Own or have consistent access to a vehicle to get to multiple work locations.
  • Knowledge of Google Suite (Gmail, Drive, Calendar, Docs, Survey Tools, etc.).
  • Organized and attention to detail skills.
  • Dress code can vary between casual to business to formal depending on the event.
  • Must be willing to work flexible hours, including evenings, weekends, and some holidays.
  • Working knowledge of theatre lighting and sound equipment, including use and repair.
  • Stage management experience preferred.
  • Possess strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Possess strong critical thinking and proactive problem-solving ability.
  • Ability to work well with a team, both as a lead and in a support role.
EXPERIENCE:
  • Any combination of training and experience substantially equivalent to graduation from high school supplemented by courses in theatrical production.
  • 1-3 years of experience in the professional field, including lighting design, audio mixing, carpentry, and run crew.
  • EDUCATION:
    Minimum associate degree in technical theatre or equivalent.
REQUIREMENTS:
  • Recreation and Parks requires all facility staff to get and maintain a valid CPR, AED, and first aid certification (certification is provided through the City).
  • Possess a valid driver’s license.
  • All employees and volunteers who drive a City owned/leased vehicle or private vehicle on official City business must complete the Maryland Vehicle Administration MVA flagging form and be cleared. Employees and volunteers who possess a driver’s license that is not issued by the State of Maryland must submit with the form with an original printout of their driving record. The information on the form will be used by the Department of Human Resources in accordance with the City’s Driver’s License Check and Flagging Program.
