City of Rogers, Arkansas is Hiring a Museum Assistant Near Rogers, AR

  • Note: This position is for a Collections Assistant and there is NOT an education component to this position.


GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF POSITION

The Collections Assistant serves under supervision of the Collections Manager and assists with collections management duties including cataloging, research, and stewardship of objects in the Rogers Historical Museum Collections. Assists in Museum planning and responds to inquiries and requests from the general public. Provides visitor services, such as historic Hawkins House tours or Museum Store sales, as needed. Performs other related duties as assigned.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Cataloging museum collections, doing historical research, supporting administration, or assisting with exhibit construction and installation. This duty is performed daily, about 70% of the time.

2. Assists in Museum planning and responds to inquiries and requests from the general public. This duty is performed weekly, about 20% of the time.

3. Provides visitor services such as Hawkins House tours as needed. This duty is performed daily, about 10% of the time.

4. Perform any other related duties as required or assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty mentioned satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Broad knowledge of such fields as accounting, marketing, business administration, finance, etc. Equivalent to a four year college degree, plus 12 to 18 months related experience and/or training, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

COMMUNICATION SKILLS

Ability to effectively communicate information and respond to questions in person-to-person and small group situations with customers, clients, general public and other employees of the organization.

Ability to read, analyze, and understand general business/company related articles and professional journals; Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to prepare and interpret bar graphs.

CRITICAL THINKING SKILLS

Ability to utilize common sense understanding in order to carry out written, oral or diagrammed instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving several known variables in situations of a routine nature.

REQUIRED CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

Possession of a personal vehicle and a valid Arkansas drivers license is required for museum assistants working in education.

Requisites:

Graduation from an accredited college or university with major course work in an area of history, art, education, museum studies, or equivalent related work experience, preferably in a museum or educational institution. Knowledge of collections management best practices, standards, and ethics, exhibition development, and historical research necessary to the specific duties of the individual. Knowledge of the purposes of museums and their role in the educational and cultural life of the community. Ability to express ideas clearly and concisely, orally and in writing. Ability to work individually with minimal supervision or collaboratively as a team. Computer literacy including ability to use word processing software and collections management software. Ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with other employees, volunteers, and the public. A positive attitude, willingness to learn new skills, and a passion for working with a variety of museum collections.

Job includes a broad spectrum of work hours and some travel requirements including professional development, Museum special events and Museum Saturday hours.
