City of San Angelo Texas is Hiring a CITY PROSECUTOR Near San Angelo, TX

Position will be open until filled.

GENERAL PURPOSE: Serves as Prosecutor and performs a variety of professional legal functions on behalf of the City of San Angelo's Municipal Court; participates in nuisance abatement and/or other court hearings; conducts legal research and analysis; prepares a variety of legal documents; receives and reviews public complaints; answers general legal questions for departments; and performs other related duties as assigned.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Receives and screens Class C Misdemeanor complaints; determines the occurrence of prosecutable offenses.
  • Files criminal, nuisance, and animal related charges in the Municipal Court for all cases not initiated by law enforcement personnel.
  • Attends and represents the City in various types of legal proceedings including pre-trial hearings, nuisance abatement hearings, dangerous animal hearings, truancy hearings, and criminal trials.
  • Oversees and coordinates the prosecution of all Class C misdemeanors on behalf of the City.
  • Accepts or declines charges and plea negotiations with defendants and opposing counsel.
  • Performs legal research pertaining to case law, legal precedents, municipal laws and ordinances, and Federal, State, and local statutes; develops trial strategies.
  • Drafts and prepares ordinances, legal opinions, and/or other types of legal documents.
  • Liaises and maintains working relationships with judges, attorneys, court personnel, defendants, law enforcement personnel, and City officials regarding various legal matters.
  • Hours: Monday through Friday, 8:00 am to 5:00 pm. Flexible schedule options may be available after one year of employment.
  • Regular and timely attendance is required.
  • Other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education and Experience:

Juris Doctorate's Degree; prosecuting experience preferred; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Required Licenses or Certifications:

  • A license to practice law issued by the State Bar of Texas is required.
  • Must possess a valid Texas Driver License with a good driving record.

Required Knowledge of:

  • Civil and criminal law processes and procedures.
  • Methods and techniques used to conduct legal research.
  • Processes for preparing various types of legal documents.

Preferred Skill in:

  • Performing a variety of civil and criminal legal functions on behalf of a municipality or government entity.
  • Prosecuting Class C misdemeanors.
  • Attending and participating in hearings, trials, and other legal proceedings.

Physical Demands / Work Environment:

  • Work is performed in a standard office environment, in, and around city, court and jail facilities.
