Job Summary

Under general supervision, is responsible for inspecting, repairing and overhauling SCBA (Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus) components. Exercises no supervision.

Work Hours
7:45 a.m. - 4:30 p.m., possible rotating shifts, evenings weekends and holidays

Essential Job Functions

  • Inspects, repairs, operates, and overhauls SCBA (Self Contained Breathing Apparatus) components. Provides support to Building and Fire Inspectors.
  • Reviews fire alarm and detection plans for conformance with the International Fire Code. Performs a yearly mask fit testing for Firefighters as required by the U.S. Department of Labor standards.
  • Tests air quality, inspects, maintains, repairs, assists with installation, and tests Fire Alarm and Fire Sprinkler systems; frequently lifting and carrying up to 50 pounds.
  • Inspects and repairs industrial scientific gas detectors.
  • Inspects and repairs Bio Pak Closed Circuit SCBAs.
  • Fills, inspects, and services various oxygen systems.
  • Inspects, maintains, and services Thermal Imaging Cameras.
  • Provides assistance to fire alarm designers, fire alarms and detection contractors, architects, and engineers regarding City ordinances. Conducts diagnostic testing of various breathing apparatus; tests each component to ensure quality performance of breathing equipment meets State, Federal and other mandated laws and regulations.
  • Reviews fire sprinkler plans for conformance with the International Fire Code. Maintains mandated State/Federal written/automated documentation of tests performed; prepares correspondence and special reports; enters data in computer.
  • Troubleshoots and repairs dive equipment; conducts high pressure cylinder inspection procedures as needed. Responds to Emergency Calls in regards to Fire alarm and Fire Sprinkler activations.
  • Drives various kinds of Fire Department apparatus while inspecting, repairing and overhauling SCBA components. Performs site visits to assist field inspectors in acceptance testing of fire alarms, detection systems, and fire sprinkler systems.
  • Attends meetings upon request.
  • Performs related duties and fulfills responsibilities as required.

Job Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent (recognized by the Texas Education Agency or a regional accrediting agency).
  • Four (4) years of experience in inspecting, repairing and overhauling SCBA (Self Contained Breathing Apparatus) components.
  • Valid Texas Class C driver's license OR valid Class C driver's license from another state with the ability to obtain a valid Class C Texas license within 30 days of becoming a Texas resident.
  • Must pass a Transportation Security Administration (TSA) Security Threat Assessment and a Criminal History Records Check upon employment.
  • Must maintain federally mandated security clearance required to work at an airport at all times.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Two (2) years of experience in inspecting, testing, maintaining and repairing fire alarm systems and their associated devices.
  • Two (2) years of experience in inspecting, testing, maintaining and repairing fire sprinkler systems and their associated devices.
  • State of Texas Fire Alarm License (FAL).
  • National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET) I or II certification in Fire Alarm Systems (FAS), Fire Sprinkler System Layout and Design or Inspection, Testing and Maintenance (ITM).

One year of full-time experience is defined as 30 or more hours worked per week for 12 months. One year of higher education is defined as 30 credit hours completed at an accredited college or university.
  • Applicants selected for employment with the City of San Antonio in this position must receive satisfactory results from pre-employment drug testing and background checks. If required for the position, a physical, motor vehicle record evaluation, and additional background checks may be conducted.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of procedures, practices, and techniques of Self Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) equipment repair and maintenance.
  • Knowledge of troubleshooting electronic components using diagnostic techniques and procedures.
  • Knowledge of tools, equipment, parts, and supplies used in the repair of SCBA repair and maintenance.
  • Knowledge of safe work and equipment operation practices and procedures.
  • Knowledge of procedures, practices and techniques involved in diving procedures.
  • Skill in repairing thermal imaging cameras.
  • Skill in operating all the tools and equipment used in the repair and maintenance of SCBA equipment.
  • Skill in operating and testing SCBA equipment.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively.
  • Ability to train employees in complex repair and maintenance procedures.
  • Ability to perform all the physical requirements of the position, with or without accommodations.
  • Working conditions are primarily in an outside or shop environment with frequent exposure to temperature extremes, dust, damp/wet surfaces,high levels, oily surfaces, and hazardous heavy equipment.
