The City of San Rafael is recruiting for a Custodian to work at our Al Boro Community Center (Pickleweed). Under direct supervision, this position performs routine cleaning duties in maintaining facilities centers, provides direction to facility assistants, and provides general information in response to inquiries. The Custodian position typically works Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., and occasionally will be required to work nights and weekends.

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES:

  • Sweeps, mops, oils/waxes and polishes floors.
  • Dusts and polishes woodwork, fixtures, and equipment.
  • Washes windows, walks and lavatories.
  • Empties and cleans wastebaskets and trash containers.
  • Provides lead direction to part-time/seasonal custodial aides and facility attendants.
  • Works at the front desk performing reception duties in relief of other staff members.
  • Moves and sets up chairs and tables.
  • Cleans and polishes lighting fixtures, surfaces, and trim.
  • Cleans rooms, hallways, lobbies, lounges, rest rooms, corridors, elevators, stairways, and locker rooms and other work areas.
  • Sweeps, scrubs, waxes, and polishes floor.
  • Cleans rugs, carpets, upholstered furniture, and draperies.
  • Empties waste baskets and transports trash/waste to disposal area.
  • Replenishes bathroom supplies.
  • Replaces light bulbs.
  • Transports small equipment or tools between departments.
  • Delivers messages.
  • Performs related duties as required.

KNOWLEDGE OF/ABILITY TO:

  • Methods, materials and equipment used in the maintenance of buildings and grounds.
  • Written and spoken English.
  • Use a variety of cleaning equipment and materials.
  • Communicate effectively orally and in writing in English.
  • Follow written and oral directions.
  • Work cooperatively with others.
  • Work evenings, weekends and some holidays.

LANGUAGE/MATHEMATICAL/REASONING SKILLS:

  • Ability to read a limited number of two-and-three syllable words and to recognize similarities and differences between words and between series of numbers.
  • Ability to print and speak simple sentences.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions.
  • Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE/OTHER:

  • Graduation from an accredited high school or equivalent.
  • Able to read and write English.
  • Some custodial experience preferred.
  • Ability to converse in Spanish is preferable and a valuable skill for this position.
  • Possession of a valid driver’s license with a satisfactory driving record is preferred.

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. Benefits

The City of San Rafael offers an attractive compensation and benefits program. The salary range for this position is $4,626 - $5,623 per month DOQ/DOE and a competitive benefits program including:

  • Retirement: The City is a part of the Marin County Employee Retirement Association (MCERA) plan, which offers reciprocity between agencies in CalPERS (this is part of the 37 Act County System):
    • Classic Employees (Tier 2 – hired on or after 7/1/2011) - 2% @ at 55 formula, average of three years of compensation.
    • PEPRA employees – (hired after 1/1/13 or with 6-month break in service) are eligible for a 2% at 62 formula, average of three highest years of compensation.
  • Health Insurance: Full flex cafeteria plan which can be applied to a health plan or converted to cash (Employee Only - $853.34; Employee 1 - $1,614.17; Employee Family - $1,768.81; Waive Coverage $300.00)
  • Life and Long-Term Disability Insurance: $5,000 basic and long-term disability is two-thirds of the salary up to $1,000 per month
  • Dental Insurance: Fully paid premiums for employee and eligible dependents
  • Vision Insurance: Fully paid premium for employee – employee responsible for dependent cost if enrolled
  • Employee Assistance Program (EAP): Available to employee and family members
  • 457 Deferred Comp: Employee optional participation
  • 125 Plan: Employee optional participation
  • Annual Leave: Vacation 10 days (1-3 years of service/6.25 hours earned per month); 12 days of Sick Leave per year; 12 holidays, 1 Floating Holiday.
  • Gym Reimbursement: Employees eligible to receive up to $16.50 per month reimbursement for paid gym memberships
  • Bilingual Pay: Eligible to receive $150 per month for certified fluency.
  • Social Security: The City of San Rafael does not contribute to social security
  • State Disability Insurance (SDI): Employees do participate in SDI and are eligible to receive SDI benefits
  • Work Week: 37.5 hours per week/7.5 hours per day
