City of Sierra Madre is Hiring a Maintenance Worker Near Sierra, CA

GENERAL PURPOSE

Under direct supervision, maintain street rights-of-way and sanitary sewer system, including construction work in the general areas of sidewalks, curbs, gutters, water systems, sewer systems, streets and traffic signage maintenance. Performs right-of-way landscape maintenance, operates light power equipment, assists in the repair and the maintenance of tools and equipment.

CLASSIFICATION CHARACTERISTICS

The fundamental reason this classification exists is to perform the various street, vehicle, facility and open space maintenance tasks and services.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.

  • Trims trees; cuts down dead trees and removes stumps;
  • Mixes, pours, lays, and finishes concrete on sidewalks, curbs, gutters, etc.;
  • Paves and repairs potholes in streets with hot asphalt or cold mix;
  • Grades and levels dirt streets and areas;
  • Builds and repairs rock, block, stucco and brick walls;
  • Builds water fountains and bridges;
  • Performs landscape care and maintenance, such as weed pulling, grass and tree planting, trash collection;
  • Removes mud on streets from mud slides, water leaks or damage; fills and places sandbags during heavy rains; responds to emergency ruptures in water mains;
  • Sets-up meeting rooms, including arrangement of chairs and tables, and removal of same;
  • Removes hazardous objects from streets;
  • Paints street signs, buildings, walls and pavement;
  • Cleans and clears drainage systems and catch basins; sewer lines and manholes; assists in assembling sewer lines for public restrooms;
  • Replaces sewer mains and laterals to repair damage or alleviate blockages;
  • Responds to emergency call-outs for after-hours repairs to public facilities or for disaster response;
  • Places banners and traffic control barricades for special events and holidays;
  • Provides staffing for community events, including weekends and evenings, monitoring and emptying trash containers and monitoring portable restrooms and calling vendor for service of same;
  • Maintains equipment and materials used in the work;
  • Procures materials for work, such as cement, gravel, sand, wood, asphalt, etc.,;
  • Performs other related duties as required.

QUALIFICATIONS GUIDELINES

Knowledge of:

  • Knowledge of or experience in construction trades, including carpentry;
  • Concrete forming, placement and finishing;
  • Plumbing;
  • Landscaping;
  • Tree trimming;
  • Electrical work;
  • Operation of heavy construction equipment;
  • Safe work practices.

Ability to:

  • Operate a loader, backhoe, sewer jetter truck, sewer vacuum truck, cement truck, jack hammer, paint sprayer, dump truck, tree truck, welding machine and other maintenance and street repair machinery;
  • Use a variety of tools, such as a shovel, picks, axes, drills, chain saws, paint gun, cutting torch, level and other construction, custodial, maintenance and landscaping tools;
  • Use a variety of concrete, asphalt, paint, roofing, and sewer supplies;
  • Use fine and gross motor coordination in using numerous maintenance, power and hand tools and equipment and machinery;
  • Exert considerable physical effort in moderate to heavy work involving stooping/kneeling, pushing/pulling, fingering/feeling, and lifting/carrying;
  • Differentiate between and perceive texture, sound, and form.

Education/Training/Experience:

High school diploma or equivalent; education sufficient to read, write and understand directions in English, and to successfully meet and deal with the public and other employees; one year of skilled experience in the construction and maintenance or related labor, or semi-skilled work; or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required skills, knowledge and abilities.

Licenses; Certificates; Special Requirements:

Possession of a valid California driver's license; Class "C" or higher, obtain within 12 months of date of employment and hold a Class "B" driver's license in the State of California. Obtain a level 1 sewer collection certification within 12 months of date of hire. Must obtain an American Red Cross certificate in First Aid/CPR/AED for Schools and the Community or equivalent within three months of employment.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, feel or operate objects, tools, or controls; and reach with hands and arms. The employee is frequently required to sit; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; talk or hear. This job involves frequent lifting of 35-50 pounds with occasional lifting of up to 75-100 or more. This is often combined with bending, twisting, or working on irregular surfaces or at heights above the ground.

Mental Demands:

While performing the duties of this class, the employee is regularly required to use oral communication skills; read and file material alphabetically or numerically; work with constant interruptions; and interact with employees, management, and others encountered in the course of work; occasionally subject to conflicts.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in outside weather conditions. The employee is regularly exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, traffic, and risk of electrical shock. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

Disaster Service Workers

All City of Sierra Madre employees are designated Disaster Service Workers through state law (California Government Code Section 3100-3109). Employees are required to complete all Disaster Service Worker-related training as assigned, and to return to work as ordered in the event of an emergency.
