TITLE: ELECTRICIAN 

DEPARTMENT: PUBLIC WORKS -- BUILDINGS 

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

This is very responsible electrical and Fire alarm systems work involving both maintenance, repairs, and new projects.

Work involves responsibility for installing and maintaining the electrical and Fire alarm systems for municipal buildings in accordance with engineering specifications, codes regulations and safety requirements. Duties include planning layouts, installing, and repairing wiring, electrical fixtures, apparatus, and control equipment and installing electrical displays. This position also has the responsibility for making difficult electrical and Fire alarm systems installation and repair decisions. This work requires that the employee have considerable knowledge, skill and ability in electrical and Fire alarm systems installation repair and maintenance. Replaces LED traffic lights only.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

Works under the general supervision of the Facility Manager or designee. 

SUPERVISION EXERCISED

Supervises workers of lower classifications, when assigned.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Installs and wires control panels, high and low volt distribution centers and lead-in-circuits, lighting facilities and other apparatus in accordance with schematic drawings, specifications, codes, regulations, and safety requirements.

 Measures, cuts bend, threads, assembles, and installs electrical conduit using such tools as hacksaw, pipe threader and conduit bender; pulls wiring through conduit, splices wire by stripping insulation from terminal leads with knife or pliers, twisting or soldering wires together and applying tape or terminal caps.

Connects wiring to lighting fixtures and power equipment, using hand tools.

Installs control and distribution apparatus, such as switches, relays, and circuit-breaker panels, fastening in place with screws or bolts, using hand tools and power tools.

Tests continuity of circuit to ensure electrical compatibility and safety of components, using testing instruments such as ohmmeter and oscilloscope.

 Maintains liaison with United Illuminating.

 Responds to emergency calls and makes diagnosis of problems.

 Assists citizen groups in providing for electrical needs at special events.

 Plans and prepares estimates of work and materials required. Initiates purchasing procedures.

 Uses all tools, equipment and materials responsibly and performs basic inspection and preventive maintenance prior to use. Performs work in a safe manner and observes all safety procedures.

 Maintenance on Electrical motors, replaces belts and grease motors.

 Oversees the work of helpers and lower classifications, as assigned.

 Fills out job report forms, as assigned.

 Performs work of lower classifications, as necessary. Snowplows parking lots/snow removal.

 KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Considerable knowledge of the tools, equipment, and methods of electrical and Fire alarm systems installation, repair and maintenance.

 Considerable knowledge of the work standards and safety procedures in high volt electricity.

 Considerable skill in the use of the tools and equipment of the electrical trade.

 Considerable ability to perform electrical maintenance and installation safely, effectively and efficiently.

 Considerable ability to follow oral and written instructions and to learn city procedures. Good ability to communicate orally.

 Considerable ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers, and the general public.

 Good ability to fill out forms and follow purchasing procedures.

 Good ability to oversee the work of others.

 QUALIFICATIONS

A high school or trade school diploma or the equivalent plus three years of electrical trouble shooting and Fire alarm system experience, or an equivalent combination of education and qualifying experience.

 SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Must have a valid Connecticut driver's license.

 Must hold a Class E-1 or Class E-2 State of Connecticut Electrician's License.

Hand and power tools, motor vehicle, meters.
