Maintenance/Operator

Position Level: Non-exempt

Reports to: Maintenance Supervisor

Position Summary

The Maintenance/Operator carries out daily preventative and corrective maintenance of the Water Resource Recovery utility to include structures, grounds, and equipment. Incumbent works on equipment lubrication; provides preventative and corrective maintenance tasks; operates maintenance equipment and tools; troubleshoots and corrects equipment and system problems; and performs the duties of the utility Operator on a relief basis.

Essential Job Functions (include but are not limited to)

  • Repairs Utility structures and equipment.
  • Performs preventative maintenance tasks, troubleshoots, and records and communicates significant equipment problems on Utility equipment.
  • Maintains required work orders, reports, and records for preventative and corrective maintenance.
  • Performs general mechanical maintenance and repair on plant and lift station equipment and machinery.
  • Checks equipment for operation and performs routine maintenance duties.
  • Performs minor machinery and equipment repairs.
  • Operates and maintains all hand and power tools used in the machine and repair shop.
  • Operates and maintains the wastewater treatment facility solids handling processes and equipment.
  • Performs process control tests. Samples wastewater and sludge streams for laboratory analysis. Monitors charts, graphs, totalizers, and indicators. Records, analyzes, and reports data collected. Logs daily activity and significant events in facility logbook.
  • Cuts grass and weeds and performs other general grounds maintenance.
  • Removes snow from parking lots, sidewalks, and drives.
  • Responsible for observing and reporting on facility security, safety, equipment condition, and facility cleanliness. Corrects problems, if possible.
  • Cooperates and coordinates with supervisory, maintenance, and laboratory personnel daily.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Education/Skills/Experience

  • Minimum of high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Knowledge of pumps, motors, and related equipment, as well as their maintenance and repair needs.
  • Ability to analyze and diagnose causes of mechanical breakdowns.
  • Working knowledge of hazards and applicable safety precautions related to plant operations.
  • Sufficient knowledge of electrical systems to perform lock out procedures.
  • Knowledge of wastewater treatment technology to include equipment and processes.
  • Ability to understand operating and maintenance (O&M) manuals, safety and personnel policies and procedures, and written instructions.
  • Ability to interpret O&M facility diagrams and flow sheets.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with fellow employees, supervisors, other departments, contractors, consultants, and the public.
  • Ability to use courtesy, tact, diplomacy, and persuasiveness when coordinating with and training others.
  • Knowledge of Wastewater Treatment Facility Operation and maintenance procedures.
  • Knowledge of gas and arc welding preferred.
  • One (1) year of experience in the operation and maintenance of a mechanical wastewater treatment facility preferred.

Safety Requirements

  • Report any unsafe task or operation immediately to management prior to continuing task.
  • Immediately report incidents involving injury, illness, safety hazard, or property damage.
  • Comply with all company and customer OSHA, safety policies, procedures, rules, and best practices.
  • Participate in safety meetings and training.
  • Be constantly aware of personal safety and that of co-workers.
  • Ability to use and operate common equipment to complete work duties safely and effectively.

Work Schedule

The Maintenance/Operator position is based on a compressed workweek, Monday-Thursday 8:00AM – 6:00PM or Tuesday-Friday 8:00AM—6:00PM. This position is required to be on call for after-hours maintenance needs. Flexibility in these situations is necessary as it contributes to our commitment to our constituent’s satisfaction and project success. Additionally, the work schedule can include overnights and weekends, as needed, to maintain the operations of the facility when working as a relief Operator.

Working Environment

Incumbent works in a collection system environment, both indoors and outdoors. Actions and decisions are controlled through the application of laws, rules, regulations, and guidelines such as set forth by the Indiana Department of Environmental Management, Indiana State Board of Health, municipal codes and ordinances, and labor laws. The incumbent must wear personal protective equipment (PPE) to prevent exposure to chemical and biological hazards as set forth in safety guidelines and rules and must understand and follow safety maintenance and procedures.

Physical Requirements

While executing the responsibilities of this position, effective communication skills involving talking and hearing are regularly utilized. The incumbent will be required to perform job duties while sitting or standing, with proficiency in fine motor skills. The role may involve lifting or moving items up to fifty (50) pounds. Reasonable accommodation will be provided to facilitate the comfort and participation of all applicants, irrespective of their physical challenges.

Certificates/Licenses

  • Possess a valid driver’s license.
  • A valid Class I Indiana Municipal Wastewater Treatment Plant Operation Certificate or ability to obtain within two (2) years.
