JOB TITLE: Maintenance Worker I

EMPLOYER: City of West Park

DEPARTMENT: Public Works

STATUS: Non-Exempt (Part-Time) Nights, Holidays & Weekends Only

PAY: $13.00

SUMMARY: The Maintenance Worker I is responsible for performing a variety of general buildings and grounds related work at an assigned facility that involves skilled and semi-skilled manual work in street landscaping, repair, drain and catch basin maintenance, construction activities and operation of heavy equipment.

  • Performs a variety of facility maintenance work in order to ensure a clean and safe environment for the public and City employees; minimize major repair and/or replacement costs; and/or extend the useful life of equipment and fixtures.
  • Cleans offices, break rooms, restrooms, halls, shop areas, pavilions, sidewalks and other areas in order to provide a clean, sanitary and safe environment for the public and staff.
  • Interacts with the public and/or other City employees in order to give directions/information, explain work activities/procedures, identify their service needs, and/or resolve day-to-day operational issues.
  • Sets out temporary traffic control devices at the work site in order to provide a safe work environment and facilitate safe, efficient traffic flow.
  • Prepares a variety of log sheets in order to document work activities, track equipment usage and provide summary information to management.
  • Maintains a variety of landscape and construction related equipment in order to ensure that the equipment operates safely and appropriately when needed; extend the useful lifeof the equipment; minimize down time; and minimize major repair/replacement costs.
  • Moves a variety of furniture and related items in order to relocate/rearrange workstations/offices, set up for meetings, activities and events.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned by management.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • This job has no supervisory responsibilities.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED), or at least 6 months experience and/or training in maintenance, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Certificates, licenses and registrations required:

o Must have a valid Florida driver’s license.

  • Other skills required:

o At least 5 years of experience in Parks and Public Works maintenance and repairs activities.

o Considerable experience in maintenance, construction or general labor operations depending on area of assignment including previous supervisory experience or any equivalent combination of training and experience.

o Knowledge of techniques for performing a variety of general facilities maintenance work.

o Knowledge of established procedures for trimming a variety of trees, shrubs and bushes.

o Knowledge of procedures, techniques and established safety procedures for operating, maintaining and repairing a variety of maintenance and landscape related tools and equipment.

o Knowledge of basic buildings and grounds maintenance procedures.

o Ability to operate or learn to operate a variety of tools/equipment associated with performing a variety of general maintenance work.

o Ability to operate a variety of landscape related tools/equipment.

o Ability to multi-task.

o Ability to work with limited supervision.

o Ability to operate a variety of motor vehicles.

o Ability to understand, carry out and communicate written and oral instruction.

o Ability to read, understand and follow instructions/guidelines associated with a variety of general maintenance work.

o Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the general public, co-workers, elected and appointed officials and members of diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds regardless of race, religion, age, gender, disability, political affiliation or sexual orientation.

o Ability to serve the public and fellow employees with honesty and integrity in full accord with the letter and spirit of West Park Ethics and Conflict of Interest policies.
