Distinguishing Features of Work

This is semi-skilled work involving the hygienic care of vehicle interiors to insure passenger comfort. Employees work under general supervision.

Work is supervised or assisted as needed by a higher level maintenance employee or supervisor.

Workdays and Hours : Monday - Saturday : 4 : 30PM-1 : 00AM

Examples of Work Performed

  • Complete cleaning of the interior of all vehicles.
  • Complete cleaning of exterior and windows on all vehicles.
  • Checks and maintains fluid levels and tire pressures on cutaway vans and / or support vehicles.
  • Assists the mechanics and other garage personnel in cleaning of transit equipment and components.
  • Handling of farebox vaults.
  • Maintenance and repair of facilities, grounds, signage, bus stops and shelters.
  • The examples of work performed are not intended to be all-inclusive.
  • The City of Wichita reserves the right to assign additional duties and responsibilities as needed.

Requirements of Work

  • Working knowledge of using cleaning materials for cleaning vehicle interiors and all exterior windows.
  • Working knowledge of using cleaning materials for cleaning the transit facilities and properties.
  • Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to lift / carry bulky objects weighing up to 50 pounds (any heavier than 50 pounds then need to be able to lift with the assistance of another person) for distances of up to 100 feet.
  • Ability to push, pull and control equipment weighing up to 350 pounds, up and down narrow ramps while operating hand and / or foot controls.
  • Ability to climb a six foot ladder while carrying in one hand, cleaning equipment weighing up to 20 pounds.
  • Ability to tolerate minor exposure to chemical fumes and contact used in custodial work.
  • Ability to lift, bend, squat, kneeling, stoop, twist, and stretch up to seven and one-half hours as required in cleaning and dusting windows, desk, counter tops, tables and legs, chairs and legs, door frames, urinals, stools, mirrors, stairs, overhead vents, light fixtures, walls, and remove and replace parts.
  • Ability to push / pull with up to 50 pounds of force to maneuver / handle equipment around work area.
  • Ability to safely climb up / down ladders while handling materials / supplies that may be awkward in handling.
  • Ability to safely walk and carry materials / supplies that may be awkward in handling.
  • Ability to handle / operate necessary equipment to complete work.
  • Ability to work in inclement and extreme weather conditions including (but not limited to) rain, snow, ice, sleet, heat, and humidity.
  • Ability to demonstrate safe body mechanics while performing / completing work.
  • Ability to perform all above mentioned tasks on an infrequent basis, or higher.
  • Ability to empty trash bags / containers weighing up to 40 pounds and lifting them up to 48 inches.
  • Ability to lift a 40 pound bucket of water up to 34 inches high and / or move it up to six feet.
  • Ability to service buses : fueling, checking and adding fluids, changing fare box vaults, general interior cleaning and parking buses for the next morning pullout.
  • Ability to climb and make repairs as high as 25' off the ground.
  • Working knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions.
  • Ability to perform bus change outs.
  • Ability to maintain a valid Kansas driver's license.
  • An employee shall not pose a direct threat to the health or safety of other individuals in the workplace.
