Position Description The purpose of this position is to provide skilled maintenance in the field in a variety of areas such as streets sidewalks, and multi use paths, which contributes to the upkeep and care of transportation and pedestrian infrastructure the community. This is accomplished by operating light and heavy equipment, and repairing and maintaining equipment. Other duties include assisting with special events, Storm Events attending meetings, setting up traffic control, and acting as crew leader in the absence of the supervisor.
Typical Tasks - Operates light and heavy equipment to assist crews of maintenance workers in completing tasks such as operating various heavy construction equipment used in the maintenance and repair of streets and roads, construction, maintenance and repair of sidewalks, installing ADA ramps, .
- Maintains the safe and efficient operation of equipment by completing regular maintenance, reporting equipment failures, and repairing or replacing worn or damaged parts.
- Provides operations support and completes special assignments by assisting other departments with tasks, delivering barricades for special events, assisting with storm clean up, maintaining yards, and attending meetings.
Qualifications JOB REQUIREMENTS: - High school diploma or equivalent and one year of relevant experience.
- Possession of Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or ability to obtain within 180 days of hire.
- Must possess a thorough knowledge in the proper operation of the following equipment: backhoe, loader, roller, tamps, saws, root grinder, mixers, milling machine, crack sealer, and small hand tools.
- Knowledge of traffic control devices and how to properly set up and close off work area.
- Ability to obtain and maintain FEMA certifications.
Notes: The selected candidate will be required to complete a driving history check, a post-offer drug screen and P.O.E.T. (post offer evaluation test).
Supplemental Information PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Exerting 50-100 lbs. occasionally, 10-25 lbs. frequently, or up to 10-20 lbs. constantly.

All updates regarding an application can be viewed through your applicant portal. Health Benefits are offered to employees working at least 30 hours per week. Health Insurance - The City offers two options for health coverage: a standard PPO plan and a High Deductible Health Plan with an associated Health Savings Account. Coverage becomes effective the first day of the month following 30 days of employment for employees and their eligible dependents. Both you and the City contribute to the overall cost of coverage.
Dental Insurance - Coverage becomes effective the first day of the month following 30 days of employment. Employees, their spouse and dependent children are eligible for coverage.
Life Insurance - The city pays to provide coverage valued at one times your annual salary. Supplemental insurance is available for employees to purchase. Optional coverage for dependents is also available for purchase.
Retirement: - NC Local Government Retirement System -All benefits eligible employees make a mandatory 6% contribution every pay period.

Deferred Compensation - The city contributes an amount equal to 4.5% of the annual salary to either the 401(k) or 457 plans regardless of employee contribution. Employees may choose to contribute additional money to the deferred compensation plans, without a match from the City, within the IRS guidelines.
Paid Leave (offered to employees working at least 1,000 hours annually*): - Sick Leave - 12 days accrued each year
- Annual Leave - Accrual based on years of service and classification. Employees can earn from 10 to 24 days each year.
- Holidays - 12 paid holidays annually
- Paid Parental Leave - Six weeks of paid leave for the birth, adoption or placement of a child (must run concurrently with FMLA).
*Part-Time Employees will earn paid leave benefits on a pro-rated basis.
