City of Wilmington, Ohio is Hiring a Firefighter Near Wilmington, OH

Firefighter
The City of Wilmington, Ohio, is seeking a full-time Firefighter within the Wilmington Fire Department. The Firefighter extinguishes fires, responds to emergency situations where life, property, or the environment is at risk; and performs activities related to fire prevention, emergency medical service, hazardous material response, search and rescue, and disaster assistance.
This position is subject to oversight and certification by the Civil Service Commission. Commission rules mandate that applicants must first pass a written examination with a minimum score of 70% to progress in the hiring process. Scores from written exams and interviews are weighted evenly and candidates with combined scores of 70% or higher will be certified as eligible by the Civil Service Commission and placed on the Eligibility List for one (1) year.
The Commission shall grant an additional military service credit of 20% upon submission for qualifying DD214. Upon certification of eligibility, candidates are ranked by combined score and an offer of employment will first be extended to the candidate with the highest score. Essential Job Functions
  • Performs fire prevention, suppression, and rescue activities; responds to fire alarms; makes openings in burning buildings for ventilation and entry; lays and connects hose lines; operates nozzles directing water streams; operates portable chemical fire extinguisher, axes, claw tools, and other equipment; performs salvage operations at fire scenes (e.g., covering furniture, mopping floors, cleaning debris, etc.); drives and operates all vehicles (e.g., pump and ladder trucks, aerial bucket truck, automobiles, etc.); operates fire suppression equipment; raises and climbs ladders; prevents the spread of fire and protects property from water damage; tests fire hydrants for flow, pressure, condition, accessibility, and location; assumes command of fire or emergency scene in absence of an officer (e.g., evaluates situation, determines appropriate methods and procedures to be used, directs and coordinates activities of firefighters and other agencies on scene, etc.); administers pre-fire planning program (e.g., pre-attack plans, target hazards, etc.); communicates with dispatcher and safety personnel in person and via two-way radio.
  • Performs emergency or other medical care functions; responds to rescue calls; operates ambulance and provides emergency medical treatment to injured and ill persons (e.g., provides bandaging, administers oxygen and CPR); immobilizes fractures and administers other first aid procedures; removes persons from emergency situations; administers IVs; assists in childbirth; utilizes blood pressure cuff, stethoscope, IV kit, backboards, and other related equipment; monitors and interprets EKGs; defibulates cardiac patients; inserts EOA and ET tubes; administers medication; monitors cardiac telemetry; maintains radio communication with hospital; performs all duties according to certification standards as set forth by the State of Ohio.
  • Ensures that equipment is fully prepared and functional at all times; performs general maintenance and upkeep of apparatus, equipment and fire station; performs and documents required equipment inspections as assigned; participates in preventative maintenance on fire apparatus, and station maintenance.
  • Responds to service calls such as faulty CO detectors and smoke alarms and, hazardous spills or gases.
  • Participates in pre-fire planning, fire prevention inspections, fire prevention and fire safety education.
Required Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Must be at least 18 years of age at time of appointment
  • Ohio Firefighter Certification*
  • Ohio EMT or Paramedic Certification*
  • Valid driver’s license with satisfactory driving record
*Applicants may be considered without Certification but would be required to obtain the Certification within a specified period.
The exam will be held three times and candidates will need to confirm their testing date:
  • Wednesday, September 20, 2023, starting at 2:15 PM
  • Tuesday, October 3, 2023, at 8:45 AM
  • Tuesday, October 24, 2023, at 4:15 PM
Exams will be held in the Community Room on the first floor of the Municipal Building, located at 69 N. South Street.
The exam duration is approximately 2.75 hours. All testing materials will be provided. Applicants must bring a photo ID.
The deadline to submit an application is 11:59 PM on the day prior to the testing date. Applicants must RSVP for the exam using the link provided by email.
The starting base salary will be consistent with the City's approved pay plan and collective bargaining agreement; this position's starting salary varies based on the current valid certifications held. The annual salary range to start is $66,626.56 and up to $73,091.20 for lateral transfers with qualifying experience according to the bargaining agreement.
This position has defined pay increases according to the collective bargaining agreement.
