We are looking for someone to join Team Yuma as a Fire Fighter/EMT, working with the Yuma Fire Department. The ideal candidate will be team-oriented, adaptable, and dependable.

Pay: $19.1416hourly for a 56-hour week or $26.7983 hourly for a 40-hour week. Annual pay (same for both schedules): $55,741.
HIRING PROCESS
Application period: July 8, 2024 - July 14, 2024
Written Exam: Week of July 29, 2024
Those that pass the written exam will be invited to participate in the following:
Candidate Physical Agility Test (CPAT) Training: Saturdays only August 1, 2024 - September 21, 2024; details will be provided.
CPAT Testing: September 24, 2024, City of Yuma, Public Safety Training Facility, 3575 S. Ave 4E (Gary Maas), Yuma, AZ 85365.
Panel Interviews: Week of September 30, 2024. All certifications must be submitted at the time of the panel interview.

Week of October 7, 2024
Medical Examination: Required prior to hire; details will be provided.

Under basic supervision, functions as a member of a Yuma Fire Department (YFD) firefighting team by performing highly skilled work in fire suppression, emergency medical services, hazardous materials response, technical rescue, fire safety education, and fire prevention.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: - Essential functions, as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include any of the following representative duties, knowledge, and skills. This is not a comprehensive listing of all functions and duties performed by incumbents of this class; employees may be assigned duties which are not listed below; reasonable accommodations will be made as required. The job description does not constitute an employment agreement and is subject to change at any time by the employer. Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Responds to emergency alarms and calls for service, and performs fire suppression, rescue, and emergency medical duties as required to control emergency incidents; relays orders, instructions and information on emergency actions, and follows orders under stressful conditions.
  • Performs assigned duties within scope of authority and training, and according to YFD policies and procedures; duties may vary according to job assignment and skill level.
  • Evaluates and stabilizes incident area in hazardous materials incidents.
  • Designates and establishes safe medical treatment area for the assessment, treatment, stabilization and transportation of patients according to medical protocol and level of emergency medical certification.
  • Participates in classes, drills, and training to maintain and upgrade current physical fitness, fire fighting, rescue, and emergency medical skills; maintains YFD records and reports.
  • Inspects, cleans, and maintains personal protective equipment and assures that all firefighting equipment is in a proper state of readiness and available for immediate use.
  • Inspects and maintains YFD vehicles, equipment, apparatus, and tools; inspects, tests, and evaluates equipment after use; notifies supervisors of equipment problems beyond the scope of skills.
  • Performs station maintenance; maintains station living quarters in clean and orderly condition; performs maintenance on apparatus and equipment inside and outside of facilities.
  • Provides fire safety & prevention, health assessments, Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation and First Aid training in the public schools and to other community groups upon request.
  • Continuously updates knowledge of City geography, traffic patterns, streets, landmarks and building locations, and special hazards of designated facilities, to assure that firefighting activities are accomplished in a fast, effective and safe manner.
  • Supports the relationship between the City of Yuma and the general public by demonstrating courteous and cooperative behavior when interacting with citizens, visitors, and City staff; promotes the City goals and priorities, and complies with all City policies and procedures.
  • Maintains absolute confidentiality of work-related issues and City information; performs other duties as required or assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education, Training and Experience Guidelines
High School Diploma or GED equivalent; must be at least 18 years of age upon date of conditional job offer.
Knowledge of:

  • City policies and procedures.
  • Federal, National, State and City fire and life safety laws, rules, regulations, codes, practices and procedures governing emergency services.
  • Medical protocols governing emergency medical treatment practices, principles and methods.
  • Methods, practices and procedures for fire prevention, fire suppression, hazardous material responses, emergency medical services, and rescue operations.
  • Emergency extrication methods and the use of extrication tools.
  • Methods and techniques for handling hazardous materials.
  • Traffic laws, ordinances and rules governing emergency vehicle operation.
  • City geography, traffic patterns, and the location of all streets, landmarks and buildings.
  • Computers and specialized hardware and software for preparing reports and maintaining records.
  • Safe work practices, occupational hazards and safety precautions.

Skill in:

  • Providing fire suppression and rescue techniques under emergency conditions.
  • Assessing complex traumatic medical situations, providing emergency medical treatment, and stabilizing and transporting patients according to established medical protocols.
  • Following safe fire fighting practices and procedures, and following orders under stressful conditions.
  • Thinking and acting quickly and effectively in emergencies, and under stressful situations.
  • Recognizing the construction, contents and occupancy of buildings in order to apply appropriate fire suppression and rescue techniques.
  • Performing maintenance and repair of firefighting vehicles, facilities and equipment.
  • Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with co-workers.

LICENSE AND CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
A valid Arizona State Driver's License is required. Certifications as Fire Fighter I and II, Arizona Emergency Medical Technician or Paramedic, and Hazmat First Responder Operations, are required. Additional technical training and certifications are preferred, and may be required for some incumbents.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT
Work is performed in office and field environments. Work may require wearing of Self Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) or Hazmat Suit for extended periods of time; and climbing, lifting, carrying and transporting equipment and individuals weighing up to 200 pounds. Functional vision, ability to differentiate colors, and hearing to differentiate sounds (voice, horn) is required. Work may involve exposure to extreme weather conditions, extreme heat, unstable buildings & structures, hazardous chemicals & materials, emergency & disaster situations, body fluids, infectious diseases, and air & water borne pathogens. Incumbents must meet annual physical and medical fitness evaluations. This job is classified as Safety Sensitive, and subject to Federal and state regulations.
