Chalkbeat Colorado is seeking a bilingual (Spanish and English) Community Engagement Specialist to help Chalkbeat engage with Spanish-speaking families.

The job would entail:

• Finding and attending community events on behalf of Chalkbeat Colorado. Your duties would include finding community events aimed at Spanish-speaking families in the Denver metro area, reaching out to the organizers of the events about attending, and then attending the events on behalf of Chalkbeat. For example, that could look like tabling at a community event, connecting with families and introducing them to Chalkbeat, asking if they have questions about their children’s education and taking notes on their information needs, handing out resource guides produced by Chalkbeat journalists on topics such as how to sign up for free preschool or how to pay for college, or asking people to sign up for Chalkbeat’s free newsletters.
• Helping to manage and grow Chalkbeat Colorado’s social media accounts for Spanish-speaking families. Chalkbeat Colorado has a Facebook group where we post Chalkbeat stories written in Spanish, as well as other Spanish-language news articles and community resources. Your duties could include posting relevant content in the Facebook group, replying to comments and answering questions posted in the group, and helping to grow it. Being a consumer of local Spanish news would be a plus and would be helpful for this work.

Hours: 10 hours / week. The hours are flexible and would vary week to week depending on the events. Many events take place on weekends, so you would need to be available on weekends. The Chalkbeat team engaged in this work also has a weekly meeting that you would attend. The current meeting time is Wednesdays at 3 p.m. MT.

Pay: $38/hour

Length of contract: Three (3) months

Chalkbeat Colorado is a team of journalists who write about public schools from preschool through college. We write about local education policy and state laws, equity issues in public schools, and efforts to improve education, especially for students who have historically lacked access to a quality education. That includes English language learners, students with disabilities, and students of color.

We allow other media outlets to republish our stories for free, which means our stories appear in newspapers across the state. Over the past few years, we have increased our efforts to serve Spanish-speaking families through online resource guides, printed materials, and outreach at community events and on social media.
