Classical School in Manhattan is Hiring a Music Teacher Near New York, NY

Music History/Music Appreciation Teacher at Classical Prep School in Manhattan

We are seeking an inspiring and enthusiastic part-time faculty member for the 2024-25 school year to oversee music education. The successful candidate will teach 3-5 weekly hours of creatively presented music history and music appreciation courses to middle and high school students.

Classes will focus on specific time periods and/or specific composers and genres. The candidate should have evidence of teaching/knowledge in the music history area. The role of the music teacher is to help students grow in their enjoyment, appreciation, understanding and performance of music through a variety of planned musical experiences including but not limited to conducting lessons in engaging short presentations on a chosen topic, arranging visiting performing artists, field trips to concerts and recitals, singing and listening to compositions.

Qualifications

  • Minimum BA/BM in Music Performance or Music Education
  • Minimum of two years of teaching middle and/or high school students, preferably with courses taught to music majors.
  • Strongperforming skills of candidate’s instrument.
  • A second instrument(al) skills, such as an ability for piano accompaniment is a plus. If other than pianist professional, play by ear and/or improvise.

Responsibilities

● Utilize repertoire of all types of music literature, including traditional and contemporary that are appropriate for the ages and skill levels of students.

● Plan a balanced music program and organize daily class time so that preparation, rehearsal and instruction can be accomplished within the allotted time.

● Develop and refine curriculum throughout first semester. The engagement, enthusiastic knowledge, and interesting facts must precede chronological music history. The curriculum should include introductions to music, why & how, different instruments (including folk), genres, composers, artists – to provide broad cultural intelligence, and a thirst and appreciation for music listening.

- Utilize only high-quality audio/video demonstrations by great artists.

● Cooperation with Head of School in providing musical programs for school assemblies, open house, parent meetings and seasonal programs.

*Reference Leonard Bernstein’s Young People’s Concerts as the guiding light in creating the Music Appreciation program at Emet Classical Academy.

The compensation range for this position is $100-$150/hr , commensurate with experience and skill.
