Primary PurposeTeach sign language to parents and young children; work directly with non-certified interpreting staff to prepare for the Basic certification test and assist with the development of their skills; provide on-going classroom observations of staff interpreters and maximize their learning of American Sign Language.QualificationsEducation/Certification/LicensureMinimum: Bachelor’s degree from accredited college or universityMinimum: BEI or RID CertificationPreferred: BEI Advanced, Master or BEI Level III, IV, V, or RID equivalentSpecial Knowledge/SkillsEffective communication and interpersonal skillsFluent American Sign Language skills, Interpreting and TransliteratingKnowledge of Deaf CultureAbility to work well with adults and childrenAbility to provide training to certified interpreters, or non-certified staff members, and parentsStrong organizational skills and the ability to maintain multiple schedulesKnowledge of interpreter role and Code of EthicsOwn or have access to a personal vehicleAbility to establish and maintain cooperative working relationshipsExperienceMinimum of 3 years of experience in educational setting providing interpreting servicesPreferred: Minimum of 3 professional trainings created and provided for BEI/RID CEU creditMajor Responsibilities And Duties
  • Collaborate to create and maintain schedules for certified and non-certified paraprofessional staff to meet student needs and IEP plans.
  • Provide support to RDSPD teaching staff in the development and implementation of effective communication techniques using sign language.
  • Interpret legal situations involving police and/or CPS.
  • Verify accuracy in overtime reporting of payroll for all interpreting staff.
  • Beginning of the school year and throughout the school year, site campus presentation on the roles of deaf and/or hearing-impaired students and interpreters.
  • Collaborate with campus and program teams to coordinate coverage for staff absences.
  • Conduct observations of interpreters throughout the school year.
  • Evaluate interpreter sign language skills and provide director of GBCDHH with feedback.
  • Provide professional learning for the interpreters throughout the school year.
  • Provide sign language classes for students on the role of an interpreter.
  • Assist principals with interpreter issues and by interpreting for deaf professional staff in administrative meetings.
  • Assist director in gathering documentation both positive and negative, for interpreting staff.
  • Assist director in coordinating supplemental staff through scheduling contract and part-time staff.
  • Interpret for ARD meetings, testing of students, counseling, substitute, and additional assignments when available.
  • Establish a strong network and professional ties to the Deaf community and interpreter organizations for the purpose of recruiting and staff development resources.
  • Assist director in recruiting and screening interpreter applicants.
  • Travel between campuses daily, using personal transportation (mileage reimbursed).
  • Provide sign language classes for staff and parents.

  • Stay up-to-date professionally through the selection of quality professional learning opportunities for personal growth.
  • Research district policy, precedent, and current practices prior to taking action.

  • Participates fully in drills and safety exercises to provide for the safety and overall emotional wellbeing of students.
  • Utilize time wisely for effective management of job responsibilities.
  • Maintain punctuality in daily work times, appointments, and meetings.
  • Meet task completion deadlines established by supervisor.
  • Maintain friendly customer-service-driven interactions with all stakeholders, students, teachers, administrators, and co-workers.
  • Work cooperatively with co-workers and supervisors to ensure that the goals of the school/department are met.
  • Maintain a positive and professional tone in all communication (i.e. email, written, and verbal).
  • Perform other duties and accept other responsibilities as assigned.
