Middle School Choir Teacher (2024-2025 School Year)

Job Title: Middle School Choir Teacher 

Site: Clyde Boyd Middle School

Reports to: Building Principal Angelia Noel

FLSA Status: Exempt

Experience:Teaching: 1 year (Preferred)

License/Certification: Certification (Required)

Summary

The position is responsible for instructing middle school students (6th - 8th) in choral music and creating a safe and orderly learning environment while developing and cultivating an interest in the art of music along with the competencies. 

Essential Duties

1. Instruct secondary school students in developing knowledge and skills in choral music in accordance with the course of study adopted by the Board of Education.

2. Enables students to develop an appreciation of the art of music.

3. Demonstrates techniques to students in choral music concepts.

4. Develops clear and concise instructional lesson plans and organize a class time to provide a balanced program of preparation, instruction, and rehearsal time.

5. Assigns duties to choral assistants as necessary.

6. Provides individual and small group instruction and adapts the curriculum to the needs of students with varying abilities.

7. Uses various instructional techniques and musical repertoire appropriate for students' ages and skill levels.

8. Establishes and maintains standards of pupil behavior and creates a safe, orderly, and effective environment for learning during practice, group rehearsals, and musical performances.

9. Arrange opportunities for students to present musical performances during and after school hours.

10. Plans, rehearses, and directs students in musical programs for the school and community.

11. Instruct students in the proper care and use of equipment.

12. Organizes storage areas and controls the use of materials and equipment to prevent the loss, abuse, injury, or security breach.

13. Maintains an organized and workable inventory of all music and equipment related to the choral program.

14. Makes minor adjustments to musical equipment and requests repairs as appropriate.

15. Evaluates student performance and growth in knowledge and understanding and prepare regular progress reports.

16. Conferences regularly with parents/guardians regarding behavior observations and the performance of students.

17. Identifies student needs and cooperates with other professional staff members in helping students solve health, attitude, and learning problems.

18. Maintains thorough records for each student.

19. Selects, requisitions, and maintains books, instructional materials, and instructional aids.

20. Models nondiscriminatory practices in all activities.

Job Requirements:

1. Attends staff development programs, curriculum development meetings, and other professional activities.

2. Keeps abreast of developments, research, and new technology in music education.

3. Performs any other related duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES: Basic knowledge of technology principles. General knowledge of computers and related technology devices. Ability to systematically troubleshoot standard computers. Ability to diagnose and resolve basic technical issues. Ability to follow all district policies and procedures. Ability to work independently, displaying initiative and enthusiasm for tasks. Demonstrating strong communication skills, orally and in writing, with faculty, staff, team members, and administrators. Ability to work without supervision and work as a team player. Demonstrate initiative and flexibility. Ability to document records accurately. Ability to manage confidential information that respects students, families, and employees. Ability to listen effectively. Strong customer focus; service-oriented attitude. Ability to complete multiple tasks simultaneously.

LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to speak clearly in a well-modulated voice with good diction. Ability to read, write, and interpret English in various forms. Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide into all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

REASONING ABILITY: Applying common sense understanding to carry out written and oral instructions. Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with abstract and concrete variables.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The physical demands described here must be met by an employee to perform the essential functions of this job successfully. The employee will be lifting, bending, and crawling under desks and counters; must be able to raise a minimum of thirty (30) pounds. The employee will be standing and climbing stairs.
