National General Contractor is looking to add a Director of Project Accounting. The Director of Project Accounting will lead the accounting function for construction projects across the New York City region, ensuring financial integrity, accuracy, and compliance with both corporate and regulatory standards. This role will work closely with project managers, finance teams, and senior leadership to provide oversight of all financial aspects of ongoing construction projects.

Key Responsibilities:

• Manage and oversee the project accounting function for all construction projects in the NYC region, ensuring accurate and timely financial reporting.
• Collaborate with project managers to develop and monitor project budgets, ensuring adherence to financial targets and updating forecasts as needed.
• Implement robust cost control measures, including tracking project costs, analyzing variances, and reporting deviations to senior management.
• Ensure that all project contracts are thoroughly reviewed, understood, and complied with, including payment terms, billing schedules, and any financial obligations.
• Supervise the preparation and submission of monthly progress billings, ensuring they are aligned with project timelines and milestones.
• Identify and assess financial risks associated with projects, proposing mitigation strategies to minimize exposure.
• Oversee the project-specific AP/AR processes, ensuring timely payment to vendors and receipt of payments from clients.
• Monitor project cash flow, ensuring liquidity for project needs and reporting to corporate finance on expected inflows/outflows.
• Manage, mentor, and develop a team of project accountants, ensuring the team operates effectively and maintains high standards of performance.
• Support internal and external audits by preparing necessary financial documentation and ensuring adherence to GAAP and other relevant accounting standards.
• Identify and implement improvements to accounting systems, processes, and reporting tools to enhance the efficiency and accuracy of financial reporting.

Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field. CPA preferred.
• 10 years of project accounting experience, with at least 5 years in the construction industry. Experience in a leadership role is required.
• Proficient in project accounting software, ERP systems, and advanced Excel skills. Familiarity with construction-specific systems such as Procore, Viewpoint, or Sage 300 is a plus.
• Strong understanding of GAAP, construction accounting, job costing, WIP reporting, and percentage-of-completion accounting.
• Proven ability to lead, mentor, and develop accounting teams.
• Excellent communication skills, with the ability to work collaboratively across various departments and with senior leadership.
