COFCO International North America is Hiring a Rail Pit Near East Saint Louis, IL

Job Overview:
We are seeking a dedicated individual to join our team as a Rail Pit Worker. As a Rail Pit Worker, you will be responsible for performing various duties related to rail pit operations. This is a physically demanding role that requires attention to detail and the ability to work in a fast-paced environment.

Typical Workday:

Working as a team with the rail pit supervisors and other rail pit employees, you are responsible for safe and efficient railcar movement and the unloading of grain and feed products out of railcars. You must understand the proper operation of conveyance equipment, railcar movement and the associated safety systems of that equipment. Responsible for communicating effectively with the rail pit supervisors and other rail pit employees to ensure the proper unloading of railcars and their safe operations. Follow established policies and procedures, along with proper communications when operating grain handling equipment. This position is expected to assist all landside areas of the unloading and transferring of grain and feed products which may include, but not limited to truck, rail and cleaning operations.

Primary Responsibilities:

· Working as a team with the rail pit supervisors and other rail pit employees, you are responsible for the safe and efficient railcar unloading of grain and feed products.

· Talk with the rail pit supervisor at the beginning of each shift to coordinate the railcar unloading schedule with the customer, commodity and what track the railcars are be unloaded. Maintain communication thru out the day with the rail pit supervisor to ensure everyone is on the same page and that the work schedule has not changed.

· Understands the basics of the transfer system between rail pit and barge loading area to prevent cross contamination.

· Working with the rail pit supervisors and other rail pit employees to clean floor area, grates and drag conveyor to be used to prevent cross contamination of products.

· Working as a team with the rail pit supervisors and other rail pit employees to set up vibrators, car door openers, sledgehammers, pry bars and air hoses on both sides of drag conveyor to be used.

· Have knowledge how to use the car door openers to properly open and close the bottom gates on railcars.

· Responsible to wear hardhats with earmuffs at all times railcars are being unloaded (with or without vibrators being used).

· Working as a team with the rail pit supervisors and other rail pit employees, you are responsible to ensure each hopper on each railcar is emptied and there is not any grain and/or feed products left in the railcar.

· Working with the rail pit supervisors and other rail pit employees to ensure safety is a priority and all safety policies, procedures and rules are always followed—all safety PPR (Personal Protective Equipment) is always being worn.

· Responsible to know the location of the emergency stop switches for each drag conveyor in the event something is dropped into the rail pit.

· Responsible to know the location of the red light switches which when activated alerts the rail pit supervisors to stop railcar movement immediately.

· Follow all facility safety policies, procedures and rules.

· Working with the rail pit supervisors and other rail pit employees to maintain a clean and safe work environment—(the rail pit area, the rail pit employee trailer, the outside surrounding area and emptying trash cans).

· Have the knowledge that no rail pit employee (including yourself), or other employees (except management) enters any Confined Space (rail drag conveyors or railcars)

· Have the knowledge that no one (including yourself) climbs up on railcars, walks in between railcars, or under railcars.

· Have the knowledge that no one (including yourself) gets on top of railcars unless they are properly donned with a Fall Protection body harness and attached to the Rail Fall Protection System. Responsible to wear the Fall Protection body harness correctly and use the Fall Protection SRL system as it is designed.

· If the top hatches are opened to unload railcars, you are responsible to properly close and latch the top hatches as the railcars are being unloaded.

· Have the knowledge that proper “Set, Center and 20LB reduction” procedures are followed before anyone (including yourself) gets under a railcar to work on a bottom gate on a railcar that will not open—have the knowledge that all employees (including yourself) are out of the flight path in case a chain or cable hooked onto a railcar bottom gate breaks during rail movement.

· Communicates with the rail pit supervisors any railcar damage that they see that could result in product loss and/or is a safety hazard.

· Communicates with management any equipment damages, concerns, or safety issues that they have immediately.

· Be willing to assist in other areas of the unloading and transferring of grain and feed products which may include, but not limited to rail, truck and cleaning operations.

· To be actively involved in all safety meetings and maintain knowledge of the company’s safety programs by successfully passing testing and courses.

· Observe equipment and safety devices in operation and have knowledge to know if there is an issue by using your senses (sound, sight, smell, or touch) and to communicate to management if they believe there is something inconsistent with normal operations.

· At the end of each shift, coordinate with the rail pit supervisors and other rail pit employees that the rail pit area is set up for the next day (floors swept, approaches on both end of the pits are cleaned up, car door openers, vibrators and hoses are stored properly, sledgehammers, shovels, brooms and leaf blowers are stored properly.

· A willingness to learn how to switch railcars in the yard and eventually be able to assist in railcar switching if needed.

Qualifications:

· Previous experience as a rail pit laborer and/or hard-working manual laborer is preferred.

· Effective communication skills to work with management and other employees for working safely and efficiently.

· Ability to remain focused in a demanding and sometimes changing environment while multi-tasking.

· Ability to work in a variety of conditions, including rain, sleet, snow, ice, cold, hot, dusty and noisy.

· Demonstrated ability to remain focused on safety for all people (employees, visitors and contractors) around the rail pit area in a fast -paced operation.

· Basic written and verbal communication skills.

· Ability to maintain a good working relationship with other employees.

· Ability and willingness to report to work on time for scheduled workdays—willingness to work daily overtime, six days a week and some Sundays.

· A willingness to learn other job duties and be able to fill-in at other areas when needed.

· High school diploma, or GED equivalent is preferred.

Physical Requirements:

· Pass a pre-employment drug screening and physical.

· Walking on catwalks at a variety of heights.

· If needed, be able to walk on top of railcars while donned off to the Rail Fall Protection System.

· Climbing stairs and ladders.

· Lifting 50 LBS on a regular basis thru out the day.

· Working outdoors in a broad range of conditions, including rain, sleet, snow, ice, cold, hot, dusty and noisy.

· Maintain good physical hygiene and wearing clothing suitable for the work area.
